| Robert Hodgson World War II P. O. W. Diary |
| Quite home sick today. Decided to have a bit of a ganet session. Joe made pastry, (flour, water, salt) and made sausage rolls, and four date tarts, baked potatoes and plum pudding with condensed milk (Sausage, milk & pudding from Xmas parcel received at Saga) strong tea. Later in the evening had grilled cheese sandwich. I have thought out the menu for the day that I would like for my 23rd birthday, I have hopes of being home then. I'll probably work Mom overtime on it but she's the best cook I know. Here it is: Breakfast - 8:30 Shredded wheat - cream. 1/2 grapefruit 2 poached eggs, toast Fried cured ham Toast, strawberry jam Coffee Dinner Creamed tomato soup Roast goose or chicken Roast potatoes Stuffed marrow Creamed carrots & creamed green peas Blueberry pie or suet pudding Milk Supper Steak, french fried potatoes, mushrooms Toast, 2 fried eggs Fruit cake Lemon tarts Tea Lunch Cold ham sandwiches or grilled cheese Matrimonial cake Coffee or ovaltine Well, there she is, just a thought, however I'm sure I would be pleased to have bread and water, just to be back home. I've often wondered how many of the thousands of P. O. W.'s who now dream of home and good food will start grumbling again if life gets a little tough when we are home living in peaceful times again. I have promised myself never again will I be too dissatisfied - I wonder - It seems human nature to grumble. |
