American Society of Appraisers

The American Society of Appraisers (ASA) is an organization of appraisal professionals and others in the appraisal profession.  International in structure, it is self-supporting and independent.  The oldest and only major appraisal organization representing all of the disciplines of appraisal specialists, the Society originated in 1936 and was incorporated in 1952.

Recognizing the need for the highest professional standards, one of the American Society of Appraiser’s primary objectives is to ensure ethical practices and procedures on the part of its members.  The Society is diligent in its efforts to strengthen and uphold the Principals of Appraisal Practice and Code of Ethics in order to protect the client.

The ASA awards two different professional designations; Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA), and Accredited Member (AM).  The distinction between these membership categories is the amount of experience;  two years full-time experience is required for AM and five years for the ASA designation.  In both cases the member has demonstrated his/her capability in the field of business appraisal by; (1) passing an ethics examination, (2) passing an examination on Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), (3) passing a series of four cumulative examinations covering all aspects of business valuation and (4) submitting two actual appraisal reports for approval by the International Board of Examiners.

The CFA Institute

The CFA Institute develops and administers a series of three examinations which lead to earning the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) professional designation.  Those who earn the CFA designation demonstrate that they posses the firm foundation to make well-qualified decisions and are committed to professional excellence.  Earning the CFA designation requires a minimum of three years of experience in the investment industry.  Increasingly, clients, regulators, employers, and the general public are recognizing the CFA designation as a symbol of integrity and professional excellence in securities analysis.

The CFA Institute Professional Conduct Program promotes the highest ethical and professional standards in the investment industry.  AIMR actively monitors its members and candidates for compliance with AIMR Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct and imposes disciplinary sanctions ranging from private censure to revocation of membership and/or CFA designation when violations occur.
