Pedestrians should stick to sidewalks wherever possible and
use crosswalks. Cyclists should ride as if in a car - on
the right side of the road and cognizant of traffic. Both
groups should can the headphones - they make you less aware
of what's going on. And both certainly should be more
cautious. How many times have you seen people -
particularly young people (children ages 5 to 15 are the
most often hit) - dash or stroll out into a busy street as
if they were immortal? It's a scary - and common - sight.

Motorists, meanwhile, should watch out for pedestrians,
especially on crosswalks. They should give cyclists a wide
berth. They should be particularly watchful in certain
areas (near schools or playgrounds) and when it's dark or
rainy.

Cars and pedestrians are a volatile mix. They can, however,
be made less so.

If you're driving, know that there likely is no more
sickening feeling than hitting a person - a sound
guaranteed to haunt your dreams. If you're walking or
riding a bicycle, know that you will not win a collision
with a car or a truck.
