A 5-year-old District boy who was crossing Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring
last night was hit by a car and dragged for about five blocks before he
became dislodged and the vehicle drove off, police said.
Byron J. Lewis, Jr., of 2600 block of Bowen Road SE, was listed in
critical but stable condition last night at Children's Hospital, police
said. They said they were searching for the driver of the car, described
only as silver colored, with D.C. plates, said Montgomery County police
spokesman Lt. Bill O'Toole.
The boy and a man who is a friend of the boy's family man were at
Colesville Road and Georgia Avenue about 7:15 p.m. when the child was
struck by the car, which had turned left onto Georgia from Colesville
Road, O'Toole said. The man was not hit.
After being caught beneath the car's front bumper the boy was dragged for
about two blocks on Georgia Avenue, O'Toole said. The car turned left on
Bonifant Street, continued to Fenton Street, and after turning right, went
on for another block to Silver Spring Avenue before the boy was dislodged,
the spokesman said.
O'Toole said a witness told police that it appeared that while the child
was being dragged, the car slowed for a time, and then accelerated.
O'Toole said several pedestrians in the area told police they waved at the
car, trying to signal the driver to stop, but that the driver appeared not
to respond.
The boy was being treated last night for a fractured femur and numerous
abrasions, O'Toole said.
Anyone with information was asked to call the Montgomery County police at
301-279-8000 or 301-840-2435.
