Caterpillars and Butterflies

April 13
We have six caterpillars. One of the longest is 1½ cm long.

April 14
Heads are black; bodies are brown. A ripple goes through them and then they are higher. Biggest is 1.5 mm wide.

April 17
One is 2.5 cm long and 3 mm wide. They have white stripes and some hairs are white. When two met, one touched (or bonked) the other. The littlest one is 1 cm long and 1 mm wide.
Behavior in hand: it is waving its head around, now walking up finger, now waving & walking, very active. On table: moving quickly, less waving.

April 18
There are five fuzz balls looking like small caterpillar balls. We think the fuzz balls might be caterpillar sheds! One is now 3½ cm long and 6 mm wide (including hairs). Smallest one is 1+ cm.

April 20
We just cleaned the caterpillar's house. We poured out the plops and fuzz balls and webbing. Two are now 4 cm long. One is about 3 mm wide not including hairs. One is 7 mm wide including hairs.

April 21
Chester is a tent caterpillar. We got it yesterday. I found it on a dandilion stem. Chester has plopped 13 times since about 5:30 pm yesterday! Chester has also eaten a lot. (¼ + of a leaf) Chester is 2½ cm long and maybe 4 mm wide.
Painted Ladies: five are now eating. We just cleaned their house. There were four plops while we cleaned! Two are now 4 cm long - that's 1½ inches! The littlest one is about 1½ cm long. When we first looked, two were "bonking" each other. We think it's because they wanted more
