January 1, 2005 - Happy New Year! Yea for 2005! The holiday season in the Philippines is a time when families come together and celebrate. Here in my host family's home, there have been many visitors. Here is a little Pasko story:

Before Pasko (Christmas), a friendly Carigan-on who works in Manila decided to bring me a loaf of whole wheat bread as a Christmas gift. I was quite happy to get such a novel food item and put it on the refrigerator and went to bed wondering what I would do with it. The next morning I went out for some exericse thinking about sandwiches. Normally, I don't think anyone in my host family would eat whole wheat bread.
My host family, like most of my students, eats pandesal (white bread) and Milo (chocolate drink) for breakfast. So it was a surprise to discover my whole wheat bread missing! Ah well, it was not a big deal, but I just wonder what the person(s) eating it thought. Did they think it was tasty? Weird?

Up above, my friends Catherine and Joanna are growing up fast. I will miss being able to watch them grow up. To your right, my friends Jay and Eleanor enjoy balut (fertilized chicken eggs) in Carigara. Eleanor told me that GROs (guest relation officers) eat balut to give them energy for work, so she enjoys eating it. I have to take her word for it, but that is the kind of girl to marry!
My host family had a somewhat solemn Pasko season because the father of my host father was sick. It was very stressful for my family, but I got to see how resilient family ties are and how faith helps Filipinos deal with death. He passed away recently and I think my host family is sad but also relieved that he will move on to a better place.
The pictures above and below are, according to my students, the best pictures of 2004.

Up above - "Mon-mon" , er, I guess he can eat a lot?

Right - When my students see this one, they squeal in laughter and cry out "bastos (its rude)!"
Left - look at all those cute and happy girls.....and then there is Jbuneva.

Below - Two cute girls and....Emille.
