| May 28, 2004 - I really enjoy watching the children play soccer, it is such a fun game. A few of our soccer-playing friends from Tacloban came to play with us last week. They are funny because they want to teach the kids soccer skills and drills but the kids only want to play. I learned this lesson a long time ago. We played cards while waiting for a few others to join us. Our new friends are neat because they come from good schools. They have attended a few of the best schools available in our area - Philippine Science High, Leyte National High School and the University of the Philippines (UP) Tacloban College. |

| The students that go to these schools are taught that they have the benefit of an excellent education and thus have a duty to be of service to their country. I enjoy learning about this because their education has exposed them to values that I also hold dear - justice, fairness, equality and service. I asked Joanne and Babie (picture left) what they would do after graduation. They are economics and computer science majors respectively. They are both want to study nursing and work abroad! | do it. I told them my thoughts on Renato Constantio and Jose Rizal - that the Filipino, not the foreigner, is the salvation of the Philippines. They know this. But they also realize they are young and bright and they have many opportunities. I don't fault them one bit. It is estimated that 10% of the population works abroad. The positives are 8 billion dollars in remitances, the expanding of knowledge from working abroad and exposure to other cultures.
