June 12, 2004 - My summer of playing with kids and trying to beat the heat has come to an end. The school year started on June 7 in Carigara. The children are so happy. I like to watch them in their uniforms heading to classes in the morning. It is really nice to see my former students from 6th grade in their new Holy Cross  uniforms. They beam in their new status as high school students and are proud to show off to me.

My summer? I learned what we do in our community. We play, watch a lot of TV and sleep.
I asked my friends from Tacloban what they do during the summer. Their answer was, "chat on yahoo and Friendster." For research, I checked out yahoo messenger, yes its a lot of fun. One day while emailing, Kay asked me if I could help her join Friendster. I had never used it myself. I asked my yoga friend Kixie from Manila to invite me to Friendster. Friendster is a networking web service that lists your profile and connects you and your friends. Its really popular amongst the young Filipinos. Kixie has over 150 friends! Our friends from Tacloban are also listed, so we got an inside scoop on them by reading their profiles.
It was interesting for me. I showed Kay how Friendster worked and how to make a profile with a picture. If people like you they can email you. I guess this was not what she expected. She decided she did not want a Friendster account after all. Perhaps my teasing about boys emailing did not help.

In another bit of research of young Filipinos, I read a book called Reconnaissance by Tara FT Sering.
It is a sex in the city type story with a filipino twist. Highly recommended.
One of my friends is Joanne, here is a little story. She is not allowed to have a boyfriend until after college. This is common here. She is a member of the Saklang Mountaineering club at the UP. That's how I met her. I asked her about being a "modern filipina." She told me her parents do not even know about her joining Saklang! It is a mountaineering club, to go hiking and camping. It is a tricky walk for these young girls who like to have fun but must continue to be traditional. I promised to keep her secrets about boyfriends so that's all I'll say.
