| February 29, 2004 - This week, I received some valentine candy for my students from my mom and dad There were 36 boxes of Sweetheart candy. There are 39 students in my 6th grade class. How do I handle this? I asked Mrs.Tabada (teacher) for help. She asked for 3 volunteers to share. The 3 girls to your left (Jessa Joy, Yra Gell and Catherine) were the volunteers. How do parents cultivate unselfishness as a value? This was good candy, a big deal for all of my students. These 3 girls decided it was better to share. I lated thanked Catherine. Her reply was, "a simple act of unselfishness is just one thing of being a good volunteer like u." | |||||||||||||

Can I keep her? These little girls are so wonderful. Later in the week, we got a surprise box from our friends at Newbury Elementary School in Newbury, MA. I asked the 3 girls to help open to box as a little reward. I like my job because I can give my all my effort and resources and have it apprecaited. It is no problem to give everything I have when kids apprecaite it so much.

The little pig up above is our new family pig. I have learned that pigs are really smart. They are also efficient garbage disposals. They are a great way to get rid of leftover food. They grow big quite fast. I think they are neat to have around. Little survivor dog is looking

good, don't you think? He is an odd pup. I have seen him eat pandesal (white bread), papayas, bananas and almond crunch snacks my parents sent me but my host family did not like. I don't think normal dogs eat these things. Survivor dog will jump up and down for pandesal though. To your right, Mary Rose of class 4A (4th grade) shows off her letter from her friend from Chaparral Elementary in Calabasas, CA. I have met some great teachers through the epals program.

One day, some students showed up at my house after school to show me their "friend book." Mary Rose had chosen me as her crush! It felt so good to be someones crush! Haha. A comment on the difference being asian-american and white here in the Philippines. My white friend visited a few weeks ago and I witnessed a big difference in how we were treated. When I listen to white Peace Corps volunteers, they talk about things they are asked to do like judge beauty pageants, speak to the community, attend important events and visit with local politicians. Those kinds of things have never happened to me. Am I jealous of the treatment that my white counterparts receive? Yes, I am very jealous. They are automatically assumed to be intelligent and are treated with great respect because of their skin color. Does it make me angry? Yes. I tend to think I am a smart and valuable person and a good representative of America, but I am treated as a lesser American because of my skin color. Ah well, I know it is the result of history and education. I accept it because it is the way the world is. Most of the world judges people based on skin color and looks.
