| March 8, 2004- I had the pleasure of going trekking with a group from the Saklang Mountaineering Club. They are the outdoor club of the University of the Philippines, Tacloban. I have had some really nice opportunities to do fun things with Filipinos. I genuinely enjoy being amongst Filipinos. I have new friends in Tacloban and Manila and they are very nice people. I enjoy watching friends from a barkada interact. There is non-stop talking and lots of laughing. | ||||||||||

| For lack of a better term, I just say they are awfully cute. We had some great meals up in the mountains. The guys impressed me because they cooked and cleaned. They were nice and friendly. They call me Kuya. Haha! The girls were impressive, getting dirty is not what most filipinas do for fun. These girls were quite tough. Graduation will be held in the last week of March. My 6th grade class will be moving on up to high school. |

| I have been trying to think of a good graduation gift for them. In Hawaii, graduations and special occasions are celebrated with money as gifts. I had thought this was a fairly common asian thing. I was planning to give money to the students. I checked with my friends and they said it would not be good. It was a good lesson for me. I have come to like many of my students very much. In my Holy Cross class, there is a kind |

| girl who's parents left her when she was very young. She lives with some relatives here. She is on scholarship from the LGU to attend Holy Cross. I know she has to work very hard at home. I usually see my students strolling around after school or on weekends but I have never seen her outside of school. I wanted to give her some money, so she could play or buy something nice for herself. I asked my friends about this and to my great dismay was told this was a bad idea. It would cause doubts about my intentions and she would not be able to spend the money without attracting attention. (I'm talking $10USD, 500 pesos, a significant amount) I'm stuck on this. I could give it to her later. Or promise to pay for her college? That's more than I can afford. I was hoping to give her pocket money, to buy junk foods and other stuff I know kids like. My lesson, is that sometimes it is better to do nothing and not harm people first, rather than trying to help. There is certainly a desire to help people that I have like.I am not rich. I am still thinking of other ideas like offering her a job to help me study languages. I don't want her to be looked upon jealously by her classmates. At that age, anything different is usually not a good thing. Up above, I took a morning of class to show my 6th graders Mga Munting Tinig. It was great to watch it with them, to follow their reactions. It is about a class of 6th graders in a province of the Philippines, just like us! |
