January 22, 2004 - If you like to work with children and want to feel appreciated, you should come to the Philippines and teach.

I always try to think back on how I was in the 5th or 6th grade (not a good kid) to help me understand my students. Children in elementary school here already know that their studies mean a lot for their future. They  study hard and listen to their teachers. I did not have that maturity as a kid. School was an interruption from playing and recess. Perhaps I'm a bad example, but I don't think I was out of the ordinary.
At Holy Cross College of Carigara, they post the rankings of honor pupils along with their percentages. In the 7th-10th grade, students know where they stand amongst their peers. I thought it was wrong to have that much pressure on a child to be ranked like that. It does not help the self-esteem of those left out.

I asked my professor friends about this.
They told me that students would not feel hurt nor would it cause any problems. The cohesiveness Filipino society allows children to see that some get better grades without being jealous.

In elementary school, there is a valedictorian. From elementary school! I don't think we had anything like that.
My students above are enjoying Godiva Chocolates. Can you see see the football in the internet cafe? It is really easy to want to do things for my students because they appreciate it so much. To your right, my 5th grade class celebrates their letters, pictures and Halloween candy (in January) from Norris Elementary in East Hartford, CT (thanks Mrs. Morales-Reyes).

Five of my 1st year high school students (7th grade) visited on Sunday. They brought me a mango shake. I wish I was this popular with girls in America.
During my class with my 1st year high school students, I was filled out one of their "friend books" (answering questions about your favorite color, movie, person etc, I'm sure you did one in 7th grade)

One student copied my answers into her book. Under description, she wrote "tall, skinny and hairy." Ah! I took exception to that! She was not bothered and said it described me quite well. They (we?) got in trouble (again) because the class was noisy and a sister had to come in. She left and scolded their teacher. I am not sure if I will be invited to Holy Cross College of Carigara next year.
