November 23, 2003 (cont) - I can usually tell who is calling me by what I am called. If I hear "Kuya Lane!" (kuya is "elder brother" in Waraywaray), it is my 5th or 6th grade students. If I hear "Lane Ogawa," it is my 4th grade class. If I hear "Sir Lane," then it is my 1st year high school (7th grade) class. It helps me to distingush while riding my bicycle around town.

In my class at Holy Cross High School, I teach the Orange section about different places and cultures using the epals program
We have friends from Canada at Sacred Heart Catholic School and have learned a lot from them. We have exchanged letters through email and even pictures. It is a fun way to learn about other people and places.

I think the students here write very well in english. Their letters are descriptive, informative and entertaining.
Students here like being in school. They are in school from 7am to 5pm! That is a long day. There is not a dislike of school that I remember many of my American classmates having.

Here are a few examples of lettter my students have written:
Introduction
Daily life
Filipino Cuisine
Christmas and New Year's Celebrations.

December 8, 2003 - I just participated in a 2-day bicycle ride around the island of Leyte. The most fun I can imagine having for 175 pesos ($3.50). About 50 riders participated in the event. They had great bikes, Cannondale, Specialized and Scott were common brands. These bikes cost thousands of $'s in the US, but just a fraction of the price here.
Little kids screamed whenever we went by. It must have been quite a sight to see the pack of riders in their colorful jerseys. The ride took us to Baybay on the first day (maybe 80K). We stayed at Leyte State University overnight. We bonded over filipino food and tanduay. The second day took us over big mountains and finally to our homes (100K). The guys (and girls) were members of LGORA (Leyte Gulf Off Road Association) and PIDAL (Persons Interested in Day-long Adventure and Leisure ). It was a great time. I will always remember eating pandesal (bread) and drinking coke as an energy booster. They give a shot of energy when you need it.
