November 12, 2003 (cont) - On the left are some of my singing 6th graders. They are a joy to work with. Below are some of my 5th grade students. I started out reading the Philippine Daily Inquirer newspaper everyday, but after the Jose Pidal scandal (1st husband accused of embezzeling money from the government and an affair), I had had my fill of the mainstream Philippine news media. |

| My favorite column was called Youngblood, every Tuesday and Thursday. It featured 20-something authors who wrote about school, jobs, family, relationships and being Filipino. It was amusing to read about an Atenean (student at a wealthy school) declaring her difficulties because she did not have a valet to pick her up. Her dad came to pick her up from school and she felt this made her more virtuous than her classmates. Ick! Many articles were by submitted by students and graduates of UP, Ateneo, La Salle and UST. They seldom had anything to do with our lives in the province. | |||||||||||||||

| The middle class of Manila lives a very different lifestyle than what Americans might imagine. A middle class family in Manila will often have househelp to cook and clean and even drivers for their autos. It is quite luxurious compared to middle class American standards. | |||||||||||||||
| The other place where I have been learning about Filipinos is through blogs. These are the tech-savy young Filipinos, and their blogs are pretty entertaining. Up above - Christmas (Pasko) season is already in full swing in our house. The music, lights and decorations were putl up a few weeks ago. Jhanelle is one of my 5th grade students. |

| November 23, 2003 - We have 4 new dogs from the farm. I found the Filipino movie Mga Munting Tinig and thought it was fantastic. It is one of the nicest movies I have ever seen. It was a "foreign film" with english subtitles, yet I could clearly recognize the scenes as my home. The barangay where the movie takes place looks like any here.. A few things were certainly made for the movies, her class had 15 students, my class at Holy Cross has 50! Talking to 50 7th graders |

| usually just ends up in mass noise for me. Even the real teacher has some difficulty keeping them quiet. My grade 6 class at Cassidy has 39 students. That's a lot of kids in one classroom. Whenever I do an exercise or we write letters as a big group, I end up exhausted and lose my voice by the end of class. Somehow the other teachers do this all day. I don't know how. | |||||||||||||||
