April 7, 2003 - We just met our supervisors for our assignments and I feel quite good. I have 2 supervisors, the Director of the Provincial Social Welfare Office (in Tacloban, Leyte's Capital) and the Municipal Social Welfare Officer in Carigara. Both are women who are nice and seem hard working. I am happy to meet hard working Filipinos. It is what I expected, it is the norm in Hawaii and in the Navy. I have been confused to see the lack of ambition from some. We were told so many stories about having to drink tuba (fermented alcohol) and tanduay (rum) to get things done. That was not what I knew Filipinos to be. I know them as the best SKCM's, GSMC's, MSCS's (senior enlisted personnel in the Navy). Many Filipinos took care of me in they Navy, I owe them a lot.

I came here hoping to find a way to be a regular worker, to fit in the system. I hope to represent America well as role model and diplomat. The "volunteer" is not popular with Filipinos. I was hoping to just be a person working for the betterment of the people.  I believe that it will be the most effective way and I think I can pull it off.
My supervisors, Clotilde Malatbalat, Leyte Provincial Social Welfare Development Officer and Aida Panier, Carigara Municipal Social Welfare Development Officer
Leyte is rich in WWII history, as it is the site of GEN McArthur's famous return to the Philippines. The memorial is located in Palo, near Tacloban.
Aida is a kind woman and besides being my supervisor, she will be my host mother.  I will be staying with the Panier family for the next two years.  Aida enjoys orchids and this is garden.
