About a decade ago, Land's Sake began as a dream to create a spot in the mountains for renewal, and ecological progress. In the ten or so years that it has taken for the dream to become reality, the expression of it has changed, but the ideals remain the same:
Provide a place for retreats, camping and conferences that preserves the local environment and is in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem.
To explore ways of living that are sustainable and organic, including organically growing some of our own food, utilizing solar and other alternative energies, and accepting barter and work exchange as forms of trade.
Be a contributing part of the local economy, and give back to the (local and larger) community through activism and opportunities for education.
At the present, Land's Sake is not a business or non-profit agency, but a project being lived out on private property. We have no buildings and few improvements on the land, therefore overnight uses are limited to primitive camping.
Land's Sake was founded by Stefanie Mixon Kompathoum, a 1993 Anthropology graduate of Western Carolina University with experience in local environmental and student movements.
