Tearing into the Transmission
After (finally) separating the original Land Rover transmission into its three components, I
began the painstaking disassembly of the transfer case, documented with literally GBs of
digital pictures and notes to make sure that it all went back together. I did run into some
consternation with the Green Bible, since they neglected to mention that you have to remove the
e-brake drum on the output shaft in order to get the middle gears out...but it all came apart.
I set to measuring shafts and checking pieces. I also decided it was time to upgrade.
After pondering the hi-ratio conversion for a long time, I decided that there was no time like
the present, especially since the transfer case was in a million pieces anyway. After some
serious shopping and surfing, I ended up ordering the kit from Ashcroft directly -- even with
shipping and duty, it was still several hundred $$$ cheaper. It went in without a hitch, so
the transfer case is ready once the adapter and new output shaft has been machined.

I also began the disassembly of the T-18 in order to check it out, and remove the output shaft
for machine work. Upon removing the front bearing retainer, I found an odd lump of metal
shavings. Another lump was found at the bottom of the gearbox, near the PTO opening. However,
the gears themselves look like they are in great shape. We will see upon further inspection.
