Backpacking Ireland - Summer 2002
We took a bus Monday morning to the Blarney Stone Castle which was about a 30-minute drive from Cork.  We walked through the castle and gardens, and of course kissed the Blarney Stone!  But for some reason the gift of gab just didn't come my way...haha!  After visiting the castle we had some time to explore the  town of Blarney before catching the next bus back to Cork.  We ate at Mackey's restaurant.  Very neat and quaint little place.

When we arrived back in Cork our next bus to Bantry was ready to leave.  We hopped on and enjoyed the ride.  The terrain from Cork to Bantry changed a lot.  The roads were very narrow, cars had to pull off many times to allow the bus through.  The elevation was very high at times as well, which allowd for a great view of the countryside!  We arrived in Bantry late evening.  The town was very small.  We had the main parts walked within an hour.  Very pretty little town located on the water with rolling green hills in the backgroud.

On the morning of the 30th (Tuesday) we caught a bus to Killarney.  We walked around Killarney a little to see what the town was about.  It seemed very busy and touristy.  We spent most of the evening on the outskirts of town since we were spending the night in a tent at the campsite, Flesks, located on Muckross Road.  It rained throughout the night but luckily we stayed dry.

We took a bus on Wednesday to Waterville, located at the tip of the Ring of Kerry.  This town reminded me a lot of Newfoundland.  It was raining and very foggy the day we were there, which is all it takes to be like Newfoundland really. hehe.  It seemed to be very quiet there.  There weren't many tourists and there weren't many streets to explore either.  We had a great time nevertheless.  We stayed at a B&B called Stella Marris.  We visited the local craft shops and had dinner at the Lobster Bar, took pictures with the Charlie Chaplin statue (apparently he used to visit there to get away from the limelight).  We hit the local corner shop for some goodies to bring back to the B&B for the night.  On the walk back to the B&B we heard music coming from the Fisherman's Pub, so we stepped in for a pint and a listen.  That pretty much summed up our time in Waterville!
