 Old
church on Thasos
Thasos is one of the less famous Greek Islands half an
hour's ferry ride from the mainland. This is the northern most island in
the Aegean Sea, far away from the better known islands of Crete, Naxos
and Kos. It's perfect for relaxing far away from the madding crowd.
The best and quickest way to explore the island is by
rented car. We hired a car for two weeks and explored all those villages
that could not be reached by public transport.
Which way? The
Greek signs didn't help though, but luckily there was always a friendly
local happily showing you the way forward. |

As this is a new island that
has just opened its' doors to tourism, it was like every traveller's
dream to walk through old cobbled streets, observe the Greek
architecture and take note of local customs. We were invited to a
mountain village restaurant where there was lots of laughter, jokes
about Western culture and even pointing fingers to our rented car! So
much for blending in...
Typical Greek houses
Thasos has a bit of everything: warm Med waters, mountain passes,
forests, marble mines and the unmistakable Ouzo! Locals mix this with
water and the drink turns into a milky liquid, perfect for sundowners
just before the evening's meal and dancing.
Although there was no plate breaking this time, I decided that any of
the Greek Islands are well worth a re-visit. Maybe next time there will
be time for some ferry hopping and scooter riding.
