The 80's... AS RECORDED IN THE MINUTES AND APPROVED BY LALOR PTA
Events of note�
-all through the 80�s Lalor PTA attended/celebrated Founders Day by attending the Mercer County Council of PTA�s Founders Day, with the exception of 2/81 when Earlene Czmyr was the guest speaker and Mrs.Burroughs was made a lifemember and 2/83 Ed Forsthoffer was made a life member
-membership dues raised to $2.00 -invitations often received from other PTA�s to preview programs
-Ed Forsthoffer selected to represent Lalor School on the district �Declining Enrollment Committee� -1980 Phys/Ed program initiated, music and art, instrumental for 4th and 5th grades -Halloween for full school discontinued, as it is district policy only k-3 to participate -1981 new roof for school -82/83 redistricting to take effect -10/84 new curtains for the auditorium -1985 middle school referendum (Crockett) -85/86 stopped going home for lunch (unclear if this was a directive or voluntary) -85/86 Ms.Gellar became principal -9/85 Boundary changes
-10/85 Halloween for all grades, teachers and parents -10/85 request from Ms.Gellar for new lighting in the halls, new floors in the -halls, new windows and doors, among other things
-10/85 High School Proficiency Test began -1986 Governors Teacher Recognition Program initiated, Ms.Nowack selected, the $1,000 she received directed toward trips -10/86 repairs to school began -1987 Mrs.Gaudette selected as outstanding teacher her award of $1,000 directed toward computer software -9/87 mini park completed -11/87 began work on �Game of Lalor School� -88/89 library moved to basement, as classroom needed
-5/20/88 celebrated the 60th Anniversary of Lalor School formal invitations to Governor Kean, Mayor Rafferty, Senator Lautenberg, Senator Bradley,and President Reagon; refreshments and hospitality provided by PTA;Game of Lalor School to commemorate the 60th Anniversary sponsored by PTA, plaque purchased by PTA commemorating the 60th ;corsages purchased Anniversary book purchased, pencils purchased
-end of decade Ms. Gellar was injured and 3rd grade teacher Mrs.McConnell acted as principal -6/89 Executive Board enforced closed session rule -D.Johnson/G.Szajna volunteered to represent Lalor at steering committee to found PTA for Crockett Middle School.

-hot dog half days -skating parties at Capitol Roller Rink (until it closed) -first hamburger day 6/80 -balloon launches (100th Day Celebration, 5/24 missing children�s day) -flower sales -cake sales -T-shirt/sweatshirt sales -Book fair/B.E.A.R. Fair -Santa Secret Shoppe -last day treats -Mothers Day corsages -sponsored Brownie Troop -continued Spelling Bees -soft pretzel sales -paid for the Patrol to go to Great Adventure (later changed to a Bowling Party)
-tried to initiate a school paper in 1981 (not successful) -provided assistance for �Jump Rope for Hearts� Heart Foundation program -sponsored a finger printing program -assisted in Field Days and provided refreshments, purchased ribbons -hosted Santa Assembly, purchased gifts, ice cream, and small gift for all children and presented classroom gift to teachers
-1984 began sending 5th grade to Ground Round as their departing gift, also gave them T-shirts and momentos -84/85 campaign to restore Statue of Liberty-saved box tops-received a Citizenship Award, $50 donated in our name and a plaque in Statue of Liberty -arranged adult trips such as Atlantic City and Chippendales - 85/86 began a �Safe Arrival� program
-sold HELP/EMERGENCY signs - Christmas luncheon for teachers/executive board -yearbook (for a few years) -5/87 Chinese auction -Teachers appreciation week 5/88 -participated in and provided funds for 60th Anniversary as out lined above -continued to try to have various speakers but the turn out was low
PTA Awards� 1984 and 1985 100% teacher membership in PTA received at Mercer County Council of PTA�s Founders Day
Charitable endeavors - our dishes, silverware and other utensils were donated to Anchor House and Elks #105
Purchases were� -1985 Apple 11C -1985 little professor calculators for third grade -1986 VCR/TV -1986 video club membership for teachers to rent movies for their classrooms -1986 Apple 11E 11/86 B/W Polaroid for newspaper pictures -1987 new patrol ponchos and hand held STOP signs -6/87 risers for stage and cassette recorders (10) -end of 1987 decision to buy air conditioners for 2 upstairs rooms, took until the end of 1989 to get them purchased and installed
PTA concerns� -Safety continued to be a concern-it was pursued-1982 a Stop sign was installed at Barnt De Klyn and Andrew Street. -Bill for wearing seatbelts -proactive to get out the vote
1985 concerned about GED program on second floor during the school hours, it was eventually relocated to the room across from the cafeteria downstairs. -1986 head lice problem, need for more information to parents
