Healthy and efficient parenthood lies in the meticulous planning based on the knowledge about the pregnancy and child rearing. Such knowledge is all the more essential because of the solitary family system being prevalent these days. The joy of parenthood is usually associated with apprehensions about pregnancy and the outcome. Though the parents, especially the mother tries to seek advice and information from relatives, friends, doctors, books, and also through the internet, yet she may not get answers to many of her queries. The present publication is not a detailed encyclopedia on the subject but is aimed to provide guidance on maintaining good health during pregnancy, preventing complications of pregnancy, preparing for the baby's arrival and proper care of the newborn and his/her growth towards development into childhood including medical, psychological and social aspects. The guidance incorporated is on the basis of the scientific facts and thirty five years of extensive experience of the author in dealing with diseases and problems of children.

The inexperienced mother not only will find solutions to her questions regarding simple but important techniques like feeding, bathing, clothing of the new-born but also regarding growth and development, prevention of diseases and accidents in children, learning, schooling, method of studying, play and toys, health, sex education, correction of bad habits, imbibing human values, tips for making the child an achiever and more.

Since the child undergoes rapid growth and development in terms of physical, neurological and endocrinal maturation, the behavioural problems are most common in the growing children. The parents will get tips on disciplining and dealing with behavioural problems, character building, emotional stabilization and developing self-esteem in their children. The book will also enable the parents to perceive the difference between normal and abnormal growth pattern and to take timely actions.

Further, information regarding vaccination and common ailments, their prevention and important signs and symptoms have been included, so that parents may know what to do immediately and when to seek medical advice. This will help in alleviating unnecessary worries of parents on the one hand and avoiding complications of the disease on the other. The chapters on psychological problems, schooling, studies and social aspects have been discussed by our experts in the subjects.

Instead of writing ‘he’ or ‘she’ and to avoid repetition we have often used the word ‘child’. The book is expected to be useful to the parents in general, living in India and in countries with similar cultural and socio-economic background in South Asia, South East Asia and the Middle East.

This book is dedicated to the parents, especially the mothers who by their selfless efforts bring up their children, to make them important members of the society.
