Head design of Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus)(Top) Mugger (Crocodylus palustris) and Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus)(Bottom)
Estuarine Crocs lack the post-occipital scutes seen in mugger.

All three species of Indian Crocodilians occur in only one state, Orissa.

GHARIAL (Gavialis gangeticus)
Gharial is a Specialised fish-eating crocodilian.
It is endemic to the Indian subcontinent.
In Orissa it is found in Mahanadi. The best place to see gharial in nature is the National Chambal Sanctuary.

MUGGER (Crocodylus palustris)
It is the most widely occurring crocodilian species of India. In Orissa it is found in Similipal, Mahanadi, Balimela and a few freshwater lakes.

ESTUARINE or SALTWATER CROCODILE (Crocodylus porosus)
It is the most widely occurring crocodilian species occurring through India and Bangladesh through Indian Ocean upto Northern Australia. India has only three populations, those in the Sundarbans (West Bengal), Bhitarkanika (Orissa) and the Andamans.
