Test of Status Quo (Oct. 21, '98)

I was watching Leno's monologue on the Tonight Show last night. The jokes were flowing as usual when I suddenly had the suspicion that the show was a repeat. The thing is, I wasn't sure. The jokes, about Lewinsky and assorted celebrities without distinction, were as current yesterday as they were six months ago.

The Turing test, in Artificial Intelligence, describes the Holy Grail of that field. When a human sitting in front of a teletype screen can not distinguish the answers of an AI engine from that of another human, the AI engine is at its zenith. In the same spirit, I now introduce [drumrolls] the NotThatSane test of status quo. When a human sitting infront of a current affairs show can not distinguish between a show recorded six months before and a show recorded that afternoon, the country's vibrancy is at a standstill. Judging by this then, our shared political life is nearly there. We should pass out the awards.
