Basic Pokemon Ecology
Replaces in Ecosystem:
This is just what the Pokemon is similar to
in terms of diet and behaviour. It does not actually mean the Pokemon is like
that animal. Although in some cases it is!
Diet:
Herbivore: Eats grass and plant matter (Browser =
tree leaves; grazer = grass)
Fructivore: Fruit and sweet things
Carnivore: Meat eater, a predator (yes, Pokemon do eat other
Pokemon!)
Omnivore: eats almost anything, mainly small prey, berries,
insects etc.
Insectivore: eats insects (and insect pokemon)
Social Structure:
Solitary: Usually found alone or in
pairs. Territorial, generally. (ie: bears, foxes)
Disorganised:
groups without real hierachy or form, may switch between groups freely. (ie:
flock of birds)
Organised: rigid groups, definite dominance hierachy.
(ie: wolf pack)
Habitat:
You don't need me to explain this do you? Where the
animal prefers to live!
Rarity:
This measures the populations of the animals at the
lake.
Abundant: everywhere, extremely common, even dim humans
have seen them (ie: sparrows, gulls)
Common: everywhere, but not in
such large numbers (ie: foxes, hedgehogs)
Uncommon: less of them,
humans may never see them.
Rare: very unlikely to find them.
Over the course of the game, many conventions have cropped up and become rules for playing certain types of pokemon.
Grass types & bug types: Suffer/die in cold weather (below freezing) Must hibernate or migrate to warmer places in winter...or face death!
Ground types: Weak to water; contact with water burns the skin, causes injury, or death if a ground type is immersed in water for very long. Weak to ice; ground types struggle in cold weather. Ground types feel close to the rocks and soil and use the ground for everything from healing to gathering their powers.
Fire types: Weak to water same as ground types.
Dark types: Find light unpleasant; weaker during daylight hours, stronger at night.
