The Telephone Conversation-Chapter Four
Narrator: Lori, Greg, Chris, Jesse, Matt, Frankie, Jessica and Tanya had just gotten back to Jessica's house when Lori got up off the couch and left the living room. The guys watched her leave and Greg got up and followed her. She was sitting in the kitchen, holding the cordless phone in her hand, when Greg sat next to her.
Greg: You OK honey?
Narrator: She looked over at him and smiled.
Lori: Yeah, I'm fine.
Greg: You look so sad though. What's wrong?
Lori: I'm sad.
Greg: Why?
Lori: I'm just so happy...
Greg: And why are you so happy sweetheart?
Lori: 'Cuz you're with me and not running away.
Greg: I'd never run from you.
Lori: Yeah.
Narrator: Lori wanted to continue the conversation with Greg and stuff, but she couldn't. She was speechless and this new relationship had gotten serious so fast. It was kind of scaring her, but making her happy at the same time and she had never been this happy.
Greg: Why are you holding the cordless?
Lori: I was gonna call my mom.
Greg: You were?
Lori: Yeah.
Greg: So why haven't you?
Lori: I don't know. I'm nervous.
Greg: Why are you nervous?
Lori: Because I don't know how she'll react.
Greg: React to what? You asking her if she wants to meet me?
Narrator: Greg just looked at her, wondering what Lori was thinking about. He came to the conclusion that she wasn't like other girls. Other girls would be so happy to be bragging to their friends that she was going out with a member of Dream Street and they wouldn't waste any time telling their parents about their new famous boyfriend. This girl was different, which made Greg like her even more. She wasn't a regular, obnoxious Dream Street fan.
Lori: I hope you're not mad at me.
Greg: Oh baby I'm not mad at you.
Narrator: Lori looked at him and gave him a hug then went back to looking at the phone. Greg just watched her. She was so fun to watch.
Lori: Promise?
Greg: Promise. I'm not mad at you. I have no reason to be mad at you.
Lori: Well, I'm scared of telling my mom about you.
Greg: It's OK. I understand. I'd probably be scared, too. It's just- I'm so happy that you're in my life. I feel like shouting it from the mountain tops.
Narrator: Lori gave a tiny smile, but still felt shitty.
Lori: Other girls would be so happy to tell their parents that they're dating you. (pause) I just- I'm just scared that my parents will object and not like you even though there's no reason why they shouldn't. I just-- I don't know. I don't want to lose you 'cuz of my parents.
Narrator: Greg looked at her and took her hand in his.
Greg: How many times, baby girl, do I have to tell you that you won't lose me?
Narrator: Lori looked over at him.
Lori: As many times as it takes for me to believe it.
Greg: OK.
Narrator: He took her on his lap and put his arms around her and held her, trying to comfort her. He knew she was upset. She put her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes, breathing him in. A couple minutes later she lifted her head and kissed him. He was sleeping. Just as she was about to pull away he started to respond. They kissed for what seemed like forever then he opened his eyes and looked around. His eyes landed on Lori.
Greg: You kissed me.
Lori: Yeah I did.
Greg: I love kissing you. The kisses are so sweet and ....
Lori: No girl has ever kissed you like that before?
Greg: Yeah.
Lori: Well I'm glad to be the first.
Greg: The one and only.
Narrator: Lori looked over at the telephone just sitting on the table.
Greg: You know you want to call your mommy.
Lori: I do. I just---
Greg: Don't be scared. I'm gonna be right here with you. I won't leave.
Lori: Promise?
Greg: Promise.
Narrator: He watched her slowly pick up the phone and she dialed her digits, Greg looking at the number she was dialing. 332-6235. 332-6235. 332-6235. He tried memorizing her phone number. Soon it was memorized.
Lori: Hi Nick. It's Lori. Is mom there?
Nick: Yeah. Hold on.
Narrator: The sound of Nick yelling to their mom was all Lori could hear, except for Greg's beating heart.
Lori's Mom: Hello Lori.
Lori: Hi mom.
Lori's Mom: How are you?
Lori: I'm good. How are you?
Narrator: Greg held her even tighter.
Lori's Mom: Good.
Lori: Glad to hear it. So umm I have a question for you.
Lori's Mom: What is it?
Lori: Would you like to meet a really good friend of mine?
Narrator: Greg started kissing her neck, which made her squirm. He stopped and just held her.
Lori's Mom: Sure. (pause) Is it a girl or guy?
Lori: (smiling) Guy.
Lori's Mom: Does my daughter have a boyfriend?
Lori: Y- Yeah.
Lori's Mom: Who is he?
Lori: You'll meet him tonight.
Lori's Mom: Alright. What time will you guys be over? I need time to pick up the house a little bit.
Lori: Umm...well we're going out to eat then the movies so maybe around 9- 9:30 or so.
Lori's Mom: Where is he taking you?
Lori: We haven't decided yet.
Lori's Mom: Does he have a cell phone?
Lori: Yeah. I'm sure he does.
Narrator: Greg looked at her, wondering what she was talking about.
Lori: (to Greg) Do you have a cell phone?
Greg: Yeah.
Lori: OK.
Lori's Mom: Does he?
Lori: Yeah.
Lori's Mom: Well, if it's OK with him call me on the cell phone and let me know where you guys decide to go out to eat. (pause) Oh. Yeah. How was the Dream Street meet and greet?
Narrator: Greg was now listening in on the conversation.
Lori: Oh. The Dream Street meet and greet was a blast.
Lori's Mom: Did you see Greg, your crush?
Narrator: Lori and Greg exchanged looks with each other.
Lori: Yeah I saw him.
Lori's Mom: Is he even cuter in person?
Lori: Yeah. He's so hott.
Narrator: Greg blushed.
Lori's Mom: He is a good lookin' guy.
Lori: Without a doubt.
Lori's Mom: Did you find out if he has a girlfriend?
Lori: Yeah.
Lori's Mom: Does he?
Narrator: Lori and Greg continued to look at each other.
Lori: Yeah, unfortunately. I was so disappointed when I found out.
Greg: I'm a lucky guy.
Lori's Mom: Who was that?
Lori: Oh. That was just...Greg.
Lori's Mom: Greg...from Dream Street?
Lori: Yeah.
Lori's Mom: He's there with you?
Narrator: Lori tried really hard not to laugh.
Lori: Yeah, he's here with me. He hasn't left my side all day.
Lori's Mom: Well, that's awfully sweet of him.
Lori: Yeah, especially seeing how I can be a handful.
Narrator: Lori's mom laughed.
Lori's Mom: So who is his girlfriend? Is it somebody famous?
Narrator: Lori rolled her eyes. Greg continued to look at Lori.
Lori: No it's not somebody famous.
Lori's Mom: He didn't hook up with Jessica or Tanya did he?
Lori: NO!!!
Lori's Mom: So who is Greg's girlfriend?
Greg: Your daughter.
Lori's Mom: You're going out with Greg, Lori?
Greg: Yeah I am.
Lori's Mom: Wow. You must be so happy right now.
Lori: Words can't express what I'm feeling right now.
Greg: Mrs. French....
Lori's Mom: Yes Greg?
Greg: I know I just met your daughter today and that we're boyfriend and girlfriend, but I really want her to come on tour with me.
Lori's Mom: You do, do you?
Greg: Yeah.
Lori: Can I mom? Please?
Lori's Mom: We'll talk later, OK Lori? OK Greg? We're gonna have to sit down and talk about this with Lori's father.
Lori and Greg: Sounds like a plan.
Lori's Mom: You better be taking good care of my daughter Greg.
Greg: I'm taking very good care of your daughter.
Lori's Mom: Good. And Greg...I want her home in one piece.
Lori: Mooom!
Greg: She will be. Your daughter's in good hands.
Lori's Mom: OK. Now you guys have fun. And I want you home at a decent hour Lori. 9:30 I want you in this house.
Lori: OK mom.
Greg: Mrs. French?
Lori's Mom: Yes Greg?
Greg: Would it be OK if I took Lori to the beach?
Lori's Mom: Yes as long as you don't leave her by herself and as long as you take good care of her. I don't want anything bad happening to her.
Greg: Neither do I.
Lori's Mom: OK.
Greg: We'll see you later Mrs. French.
Lori's Mom: Bye Lori. Bye Greg.
Lori: Bye mom.
Lori's Mom: Bye sweetie.
Narrator: They hung up at the same time and Lori just looked at Greg. Greg looked extremely happy. That conversation went better than he thought it was going to go. Lori looked relieved too. She thought it was going to be an extremely bad conversation but it proved her wrong. Maybe her mom wasn't so bad after all.
