Silver Martens were originally, naturally occuring "sports" in Standard Chinchilla litters. Breeders, noticing this, introduced Tan bloodlines into the rabbits. After a few generations, the Tan pattern became stable in the breed, and the Silver Marten was started in 1924. The most popular color in the Silver Marten is the Black variety, since it has the most contrast between the white markings. Second popular is the Blue, followed by the Chocolate. Chocolate Silver Martens have a tendency to fade in color, so they are not as popular. The last and least common color is Sable. Sable Silver Martens may be beautiful, but they are still rare, and they have the least contrast between white markings and the rest of the fur. |
