It is believed that the Belgian Hare originated in the early 18th century. It was called a leporine, and after a while popularity of this rabbit dropped. Then, sometime in the 1880s, people who had bred this rabbit for meat started noticing its nice, curvy body shape. People began to breed this rabbit as a fancier's pet, focusing on making the shape of the rabbit more like the English wild hare. The Belgian Hare was perfected in Britain. The original standard of the Belgian Hare, created in 1882 in Britain, left many breeders dissatisfied, and so there came a revision in the standard in 1887. About a year later, a man named Mr. E.M. Hughes imported the first Belgian Hares into the USA in Albany, New York. He devoted the rest of his life to introducing this old rabbit into the USA. Despite their name and body shape, Belgian Hares are really rabbits. Belgian Hares are energetic rabbits that enjoy company and socialization - their energeticness, however, leads many to believe that they are high-strung, and while some individuals may be, this is not the case. |
