The Netherland Dwarf, one of the smallest known rabbits, was first bred in The Netherlands. It was recognized by the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeder's Association) in the 1969. The Netherland Dwarf has a small, compact body, large feet, large eyes, and ears that appear to be too small for its head. The appeal of this very popular rabbit lies in its size and body shape - for the most part, adults still resemble kits. Because Netherland Dwarfs were bred so much for their size, breeders originally overlooked the temperament of these rabbits. The first Netherland Dwarfs were very aggressive. Breeders realized this, and after saying, "huh... we'd better fix that..." they managed to bring enough docile rabbits into the gene pool. Although the population of aggresive Netherland Dwarfs has been diluted, all Netherland Dwarfs are, by nature, more active and energetic than most rabbits. Because of ther size, the Netherland Dwarf is a very popular show and pet rabbit. |
