The Californian was bred from Chinchillas and Himalayans by George West. Later on, New Zealand Whites were also introduced into the gene pool, making the Californians more meatier. The Californian was recognized by the ARBA in 1939.
Californians have a pointed white coloration, meaning their nose and extremeties (ears, feet, and tail) are colored Black, Blue, Chocolate, or Lilac while the rest of their body is white. The colors on their snout must not extend into a butterfly pattern (the color extends across the nose and mouth,) which is normal in Himalayans. The points must also not be light-colored. Californians' eyes are ruby colored. The have a meaty, medium-length body.
Californians have an average temperament, thus they are not high-strung. There also are not over-energetic.
