Mitten Stories

My mitten is lost.  The wind took it and it is in the tree.  The bird has it and the bird lays eggs in the mitten.  The mitten is warm for the eggs.

by John

The wind blew the mitten away but a mouse came for the mitten to keep warm.  He has a party for everybody.  Mom was happy because she found the mitten and everybody kept warm.

Haiku
by Mrs. Kaplan's ESL students

"Haiku" is a Japanese poetry form, inspired by nature and structured by a strict syllable pattern: the first line has five syllables, the second line has seven, and the third has five.

In this project, which was a component of our unit on Japan, the students learned how to count syllables in a clapping game.  We talked about the natural world around us and explored both familiar and new vocabulary relating to plants, animals, weather and seasons.

They enjoyed exploring this ancient form of poetry and gained a budding understanding of the literary traditions of Japan.  Most of all, they took pride in the works they produced during this creative process.

Every child in the Lamonte and Lafayette ESL program worked together to create these Haikus.  We had a lot of fun and I am very proud of my young poets.

I see two flowers.
They grow on the windy beach.
A crab crawls near them.
Blueberries for lunch,
red grapes for a snack later.
Oranges tonight.
A yellow flower
A rabbit is jumping high.
The day is sunny.
Fall comes in the night.
The sun is cold in the day.
Foxes are running.
In the water lives
an octopus.  A shark and
a small fish swim by.
A sad ladybug
was lonely.  The snow fell on
its small red body.
The monkey sleeps in
a tree.  He is waiting for
bananas to grow.
A snapdragon grows
in a small flower garden.
An ant walks quickly.
A pink flower grows.
Elephants in the garden
are with their babies.
A tiger is scared.
He's hiding behind a tree.
He's invisible.
