| What Herbs Should I Use?
There are many herbs that contain the same magickal properties and a good herb book will show you this. My advise is this. If an herb offends you by its smell or whatever, then don't use it! You will find another herb that will work just as well and not offend you. For instance, red sandalwood plays havoc with my sinus and can make it very hard for me to breath. Yet I can burn sweet grass and get the same result as using sandalwood and it doesnt bother me in the least. If you are casting a spell and all you can think of is the smell of this herb is really bothering me, than you are defeating why you are using the herb in the first place. One great rule of thumb..."The nose knows!" When you are about to use a herb for a particular spell, think of what your intent is and then smell the herbs, your nose will soon tell you which one is best used for this spell. This also goes for oils and tinctures as well. If the herb smells wrong to you or offends you in any way then just don't use it. http://www.alexander-essentials.com/ http://www.frontiercoop.com/shop/merchant.mvc If you are looking for a long list of what magickal properties this oil or that oil has, it not here on this page. I have seen so many sites as well as good books with this information that I decided to tell you a few thing that some books and web sites don't tell you. In time I plan to add the information of what magickal properties trees, stones, oils and the like have but at this time it is all I can do to get to you the pages that I have. It has only been by the grace of the Goddess I have gotten this far. There are a good many essential oils on the market now and there are a good many bad oils on the market now and it will take you to know what to look for when buying your oil. First of all just because a container "says" it is essential does not mean that it is. I have seen lilac essential oil. I hate to say this but ask any chemist and he/she will tell you that you can not extract oil from a lilac. Therefore.. how is this possible? Well... its not! Many oils that say essential do have essential oil in them but are not pure 100% essential oil. Pure 100% essential means that in the lab they have extracted the oil from the plant and have distilled it and bottled it. Many oils on the market today say essential oil because it has it in it. Kind of like when you buy juice and it says 100% juice and you go to read on to find out there is water, and sugar and so on. Many essential oils now days are cut with a less expensive oil such as almond oil. To me if an oil is cut with another type of oil, it might as well be labeled a tincture. One tip is the price of the oil. A good bottle of 100% patchouli oil at 1/3 fl. oz. may run you anywhere from $10 up to $15, yet I have seen the less expensive oil that was cut with say almond oil for only $3. I have even heard retailers say that they can sell 100% essential oil cheaper because they got a deal on the amount the bought. Bulk buying as it where. Don't you believe it! Even for a retailer to buy essential oil is not cheap. There is a lot of work that goes into the making of such oils. Ask a retailer of good quality oils if I am not right about this? They will be quick to tell you. Yes essential oils are not cheap by no means but remember just a drop or two will go a "long way!" The next thing you want to make sure of is that it is in a dark bottle. Light will ruin a whole bottle of oil very quickly. Keep your oil in its dark bottle and in a cool place. With the price you pay for it, make it last as long as you can. And the last thing I want to say to you about oils is the sense of smell. Have you ever walked past a bakery and the smell reminded you of your childhood? Or perhaps walk into a flea market and the musty smell reminds you of grandma's cellar? This is why a witch uses essential oil. Yes it has it magickal properties too but look at the long list of oils and you will soon see that more than just one oil has the same properties. Let us say love.. rose geranium, lavender, rose, orange blossom oil, just to name a few. But when you personally sniff these oils, which one triggers that thought far back in your mind that says.. "love?" You will want to choose the oil that triggers those thoughts way back in your mind. When casting a spell use all six senses if you can. Touch, sight, smell, taste and sound, combining all five with the spiritual side makes six. Using essential oils takes time like all tools in the craft to get the hang of. At first you use too much or too little or you combine a few that according to the nose just should have never met been mixed. But the most important thing is once you have found a company that sells good essential oil, stick with it. Remember, less expensive is "not" always the best deal. Use your oils and learn as you go. Practice is the best teacher. Blessed be. |
