There are a few things that are held as common tools for an alter. The first being the alter itself. Most will tell you that it has to be a portable table, but I have a dresser that I use, that way it is all in one location. I have heard of others using a medicine cabinet, some even use stumps in a natural circle outdoors. As long as it has a flat surface large enough to hold the following items anything will work.
You will also need a cauldron or some sort of fireproof dish, something that you can use to burn oils and herbs in.
Along with that you will need something to use for incense. This can be either as simple as a heat proof plate to an elaborate incense burner.
You will also need a libitation dish, something for liquid that you will drink and pour on the ground. A chalice will work for this. You will also need a way to mix water with salt to mark your circle.
A pentagram, as a representation of the the elements and spirit, how they are all connected.
An athame or sword for storing and directing energy. Helps to also mark your circle.
And candles, two deity candles; the four element candles, and one for yourself. You will also be using candles for the different spells that you do.
Depending on the type of spell you are doing you may need a varitey of different things to help you get focused. They can help boost your ability to do the spells, but don't get caught up in relying on them. Remember, YOU are your most powerfull tool!
