It had been a long, frustrating day at Blake Medical Center where my aging mother lay writhing in pain, her life in jeopardy.

The medication was not helping and the doctors were not offering much relief. Her sallow eyes were closed as if she was trying to shut the pain out, opening them only to look to me for help. We sat helplessly by her bed and I remember thinking that I'd give anything to take the pain away if only for an instant.

The minutes ached by without improvement. Though hours away, our eyes were on the time that would bring the doctor on his rounds and with him, the hope for some relief. Finally, the hours crawled by and the doctor arrived, but he was disheartened to see that her condition had not improved since his previous visit. He, too, was at a loss.

On the other side of the curtain, in the bed nearest the window, lay another woman being visited by her daughter and granddaughter. The granddaughter could not have been over 10 years old with long flowing hair and big caring eyes. A doctor looked in on her and I heard him order some tests. Soon after he left a nurse took the other woman for the test and the daughter went with them leaving the granddaughter behind.

Some time later I peeked around the curtain to see the young lady sitting on her grandmothers bed with the tray pulled over her legs and she was coloring a picture in her book. It wasn't long before her pretty face peeked around the curtain and she saw my mother, pale and in obvious pain.

She then said in most beautiful of voices "I hope you feel better very soon" and without a word she appeared to float past my dad and I as she headed toward Mom. She drew up close to Mom's pillow and ever so gently put her arms around her neck and placed her head upon Mom's shoulder with the lightness of a feather. Mom opened her tired eyes and smiled. And in that moment, you could see that the pain was gone. A smile lingered on her lips as the girl turned and swept by us.

Then, she disappeared behind the curtain as the moment faded. Though the pain rapidly returned, the lovely little girl left us with that beautiful moment and left a tear in my eye.

We never learned of the child's name, but we think of her as the little Angel. We bless this little child for the relief that she gave my Mother and ourselves and even though my Mother never recovered she enjoyed the memories of this little Angel when the pain was the worst.

Perhaps the Angel was telling my Mother that the pain would soon be gone and Mother would join the angels, who knows.

It is my fervent desire that if you like this that you send it to your friends and perhaps someday it may go around the world and return to this little Angel.

As long as we have children like this in the world there is hope, please pass it on. Thank you all
