Aerial Gunning Threatens Wolves

The threats to them has gotten worse!

MORE THAN 100 SCIENTISTS OPPOSE AERIAL GUNNING OF ALASKA WOLVES

Alaska-based biologist, Dr. Victor Van Ballenberghe, has drafted a report commissioned by Defenders and supported by 123 scientists and academic wildlife professionals, which states that Alaska's current program of killing wolves from the air is scientifically flawed. Along with the report, the scientists sent a letter stating their opposition to Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski and the Alaska Board of Game on January 6. At press time, 63 wolves had already been killed by aerial gunners this season, and hundreds more are slated to die. Defenders' Alaska office records a weekly audio message about the aerial gunning program that can be heard online. You can also view a video about aerial hunting of wolves (caution: it's fairly graphic) and sign a petition to Gov. Murkowski at www.wolfcampaign.org.

The Alaska Board of Game has now approved permits that allow for the aerial gunning of wolves. Soon, families of wolves in Alaska will be stalked by airplanes and helicopters, run to exhaustion in the deep snow and then slaughtered while they are too fatigued to escape.
Help save these wolves! Work to stop this barbaric practice. In order to succeed they need your caring help to protect Alaska's magnificent wolves. Alaska's wolves are facing the threat of death from aerial gunning and Yellowstone wolves like �Promise� one of the first pups born in the park -- are also facing new threats.

Secretary of the Interior GALE NORTON has removed essential protections for wolves. Already, states throughout the western United States have announced plans that could result in the slaughter of hundreds of wolves.

Even the Yellowstone wolves could be slaughtered if they wander from the safety of the park.
Help protect these special animals from anti-wolf extremists determined to kill them. Fight for wolves in the courts. �Defenders of Wildlife� has taken GALE NORTON to court to reverse her action lifting essential protections for wolves under the Endangered Species Act.

Shine the media spotlight on the barbaric practice of aerial gunning of wolves in Alaska to provoke national outrage to stop it. Spread the word on these terrible threats to America's wolves. Persuade tourism companies in Alaska to call for a ban on aerial gunning. Help ensure a healthy future for America's wolves and pass on the legacy of stewardship and conservation to friends and family. It will soon happen, so don't delay.

We signed a very important petition to the Governor of Alaska, Frank Murkowski, expressing our outrage that he has signed a bill allowing wolves to be hunted and killed from airplanes. The people of Alaska have TWICE voted to revoke land-and-shoot in the last seven years. But certain state officials want wolves killed.

In our lower 48 States, Gale Norton had the wolves removed from the endangered list, and had them listed as a threatened species only. This provided a way for RANCHERS and HUNTERS to resume the COWARDLY slaughter of our wolves once again. In the past five years, nearly 7,500 wolves were killed through hunting and trapping.            *DEFENDER WINS TWO MAJOR VICTORIES FOR WOLVES *

Defenders recently won two separate victories on the same day that will keep in place protections for wolves. A Federal District Court Judge ROBERT E. JONES - in Portland Oregon sided with Defenders and blocked the Bush administration's premature effort to weaken protections for gray wolves across the lower-48 states. Read full story here
In the Southwest, a U.S. District Court Judge - M. CHRISTINA ARMIJO ruled against several ranching and cattle organizations that criticized the reintroduction of Mexican wolves to New Mexico and Arizona. Wolves currently occupy a mere 5 percent of their historical habitat. Read full story here.
