| Jesus Appears Luke 24, John 20 |
| That same day two of the discilpes were on their way to the village of Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. While they were discussing all the events of the last few days, Jesus joined them. They did not know who he was. Jesus asked: "What are you talking about that makes you so sad? One, named Cleophas, was surprised, saying: "Have you just arrived? Have you not heard all that has happened these past few days?" Jesus asked: "What things?" They answered: "About Jesus of Nazareth, a might prophet of God who was condemned to death and killed. We hoped he would ruled Isreal. "Today is the third day since the crucifixion and we have heard from women that they went to the tomb and found it empty. They had a vision: an angel saying that Jesus is alive. Sme of our men went to the tomb and found it just as the women said." Then Jesus spoke ti them saying:" Men aw fooish and slow to belive what the prophets have said. Was it not written that the Christ would suffer all these things?" As they walked together, Jesus explained to them that the scriptures that had been written concerning him. The three men came near the village of Emmaus and went in together to eat. When they sat down , Jesus took the bread and blessed it. He broke it, and gave it to the others. At once their eyes were opened they knew him. The he disappeared. They returned to Jerusalem immediately to join the rest of the apostles. "Truley the Lord has risen," they said. "He has appeared to Simon." Then they told all that had happened. As they were speaking, Jesus himsself among them and said: "Peace be with you." The disciples were scared and they thought that they had seen a ghost. But Jesus showed them his hands and feet, where they could see the marks of the nails that had held him to the cross. Then he said: "Touch me. A ghost does not have flesh and bones like I have." They still did not belive, but they rejoiced and wondered. He asked: " Have you any food?" They gave him some fish and he ate it. Then he spoke to them and said: "I told you when I was still with you that everything must be done as it is written in the Books of Moses, in the books of the Prophets, and in the Psalms. it is written that it was necessary for Christ to suffer ad rise from the dead on the third day. "Repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in the name of Christ among all nations. You are witnesses of all these things." |
