The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx

The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx are probably the 2 most famous icons of Egyptian culture.  One cannot appreciate the magnitude and splendour of these works until viewed in person.  I am forever grateful for having had that privilege.

Although you can't tell from the pictures, the Sphinx is absolutely huge.  It looks like I'm standing right next to it, but I'm actually standing at a distance. Amazingly enough, experts say that it was carved out of one single block of sandstone.

As for the Pyramids, contrary to what people think, they are not "smooth" structures. As you will see from the pictures, they look like "steps" up close. They are made up of millions of blocks, with each block easily weighing a ton (that's 2,000 pounds y'all).
