This is a life sized carved statue of King Tut and his wife seated at their thrones. For the most part, the statue is pretty well preserved (though someone made off with homegirl's nose...).
King Tutankhamen (known as the Boy King) was made pharoah at the age of 9, and ruled until his death at the age of 18. He really got no props from any of the other pharoahs. He didn't erect any huge monuments or statues, like Rameses did all over Egypt. The above statue is one of the only statues he had built. Plus, he committed a royal no-no. As you can see in this carving, his wife is carved as the same size as him. Among pharoahs, this was a taboo practice, because back in the day, women were of a lower status, so the carvings of women were always made at a fraction of the size, and usually at the pharoah's feet.
But, because King Tut loved his wife, and was only a teenager at the time, and because he didn't really know any better, he commissioned this statue, with his wife as the same size as him. After he died, he was the laughing stock of all pharoahs. (poor boy)
By the way, you can't tell me that he was't a brotha. Look at his face and nose. He was a fine brotha at that :) |
