A minor sea Goddess, later called a “witch” in English mythology. She is the mother of Wayland the Smith.

The name by which the Anglo-Saxons in Britain knew the Norns, the three Germanic goddesses of destiny. Urd (fate) was the one whose name gave rise to Wyrd. (
