School rules
Sorry, we can't do without them! So please take a moment to read them, perhaps they contain answers to some questions you may have.

Course registration and Sorting
1) Age restriction and account creation

All members of Hogsmeade High must be at least seventeen years of age. There are lots of places on the web for younger Harry Potter fans, where people under seventeen will feel more comfortable. A list can be obtained from the Headmistress's office. Unfortunately, we are unable to allow younger students into the group. Lying about your age won't get you anywhere, we have excellent Aurors who will detect any ageing spells.

Once you've subscribed to Hogsmeade High, you are added to the Great Hall, our place for role-play and general discussion, and to the Common Room of the house you've been Sorted into. Messages posted in the Common Room can only be read by members of your house. Students are Sorted ONLY ONCE. There is NO WAY a student creates a second account and pretends to be someone else because he or she is unhappy with the house they're Sorted into. Duplicate accounts are possible in exceptional cases, but only after getting permission from me or another member of staff. If you lose your password, you can retrieve a new one from yahoo, if your e-mail address doesn't work any more, you can specify a new one in your membership settings. If all else fails, members can always e-owl me and we'll find a solution together. But the staff has to keep track about who is in which house, all else is chaos. Inactive accounts are a nuisance because they prevent us from having four equally strong houses and they mean extra work for us teachers. It is not our job as teachers to spy on students, nor to run after inactive accounts that never send in any homework. There is no way we can tell if a student does not react to e-owls because he or she has computer access problems or is simply no longer interested in the group. So the least you can do is use your account responsibly. Which means:

- use only one account at a time (exceptions are possible, but do talk to us first!) - only subscribe to a group when you're really interested in participating actively

- unsubscribe when you're no longer interested in a group.

- keep your private conflicts with other members off the boards. This is a group for adults, so we expect you to be mature enough to sort out your conflicts or at least to stay out of each other's way.

2) Course registration

First-term students are automatically registered for our introductory class "Disciplines of Magick". This is a mandatory course, which means you have to submit at least 50% of all assignments and pass your NEWTs in order to be allowed to continue as a HH student and sign up for other classes. Failure to do so will result in the deletion of your HH account. You can find a complete list of classes on this homepage.

To register for one or more classes, please use the electronic registration on the board. Mind the deadline --- if you want to join a class after the registration deadline, it is up to your teacher if he/she lets you into the class! You must register for at least one class per term to retain your active member status.

- Think about how much time you are willing and able to make for your classes. Do not take more classes than you can manage. When you are in doubt how much work a course will be, you can always contact your teacher personally or ask students who attended that course before. You are currently allowed to take up to three classes.

- This is a school for magical subjects. If for whatever reason you cannot attend a class in which you are expected to actually perform magic, please make sure you only register for classes that have a "no" under "Spellwork". None of our professors are getting paid for what they do, and it is simply a nuisance if you have people leaving classes in the middle of term for issues they have with spellwork. If you wish to unregister from a class, please contact your course convenor about it. Don't just stay away.

Assignments

Students are required to hand in assignments for the classes they take. You may not miss more than two assignments per subject and term (exception: "Disciplines of Magick" - you have to submit 6 out of 11) in order to be admitted to your NEWTs in that subject. The NEWTs take place at the end of term.

A student passes a course if he or she has not failed to submit more than two assignments and has passed the NEWTs. He or she will then receive a report on that course.

Each course at Hogsmeade High consists of ten lessons per term.

For each assignment, a total of 100 credits are attainable (double lessons and NEWTs: 200). The assignments are graded as follows:

O for Outstanding 90-100

E for Exceeds Expectations 70-89

A for Acceptable 50-69

P for Poor 30-49

D for Dreadful 0-29

(I don't think we have any trolls at HH!)

You can get extra credit per lesson, either through EC questions that go beyond the information given in the lesson, or through particularly outstanding coursework.

Extension and late submission

If a student cannot meet the deadline for an assignment, he/she can contact the teacher and ask for an extension. You will not lose points in that case.

Extensions may not normally be more than a week.

In case of late submission without extension, your work will be graded nevertheless, but you lose 20% of your points for that lesson.

!!!! If you submit your work later than a week after the deadline without getting in touch, your teachers are no longer obliged to accept your submission. !!!

NEWTs

A class ends with the NEWTs at the end of term. If the professor doesn't offer any NEWTs for some reason, it ends with the last lesson (usually lesson 10)

If a student does not submit the NEWTs in time, he/she gets 0 points. Furthermore he/she gets a FAIL for the class.

!!!Teachers are not obliged to give extensions for the NEWTs!!!!

Failing your NEWTs

A student who fails a class cannot attend the next level of that subject if the next level has got the previous level as a prerequisite, e.g. if you failed Charms and Spells I, you are not allowed to sign up for Charms and Spells II in the following term.

Teachers are required not to alter the rules in this case. If a student fails a class, he/she can repeat the test in the following term. If a teacher lets him/her join a class although she failed a former class which is a prerequisite, the points will not be counted for the House Cup .

Sabbaticals and membership status

1. For every student, two free terms (sabbaticals) are allowed. If you are planning to take a free term, you must contact the headmistress about it. You may not start your HH career with a free term. If you fail to sign up during the registration period and we do not hear from you, you will be unable to retain your active member status and may be removed from the group.

2. If a student takes a sabbatical and signs up for and passes at least one class again the term after, we will start counting from scratch (so they again have two sabbaticals left).

 3. A joined class is ONLY counted if the member has not left the class before the term ended, has completed his/her assignments and passed the NEWTs. If a student does not submit the NEWTs in time, he/she gets 0 points. Furthermore he/she gets a FAIL for the class.

4. A class ends with the NEWTs at the end of term. If the professor doesn't offer any NEWTs for some reason, it ends with the last lesson (usually lesson 10)

5. Professor-rule: Giving lessons in a term is equal to joining a class.

6. Individual agreements with the headmistress are possible of course.

House Cup, Extracurricular Activities

Teachers are kindly requested to submit the results of a lesson to Professor Charlie for the House Cup calculations within two weeks of the deadline.

Every month, teachers award an Order of Merlin to particularly excellent students. This is like a "Student of the Month" award.

Extracurricular activities Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities and to volunteer for administrative tasks. HH is a team effort!

And now the most important rule: HAVE FUN!
