Reprieve

Severus knew he was in trouble. He'd never felt so exhausted. If Voldemort noticed his faltering attention, the Cruciatus would be the least of his worries.
"My Lord," said Lucius unexpectedly, "if I may--might a smaller team be appropriate to so delicate a mission? Bellatrix and myself, perhaps?"
"Just so, Lucius. Meet her there. The rest of you may go."
As the room cleared, Malfoy growled in an irritated undertone, "Go home, clod. Get some sleep. I can't cover for you indefinitely."
Severus nodded, almost dizzy with relief. Lucius would never know he had probably just saved his life.
