Hermione wasn't sure why she'd taken the strange object, except that its sinister beauty spoke to her compellingly. But after hiding the Polyjuice components, and carefully examining the thing, she realized it was more than a piece of decorative geometric bric-a-brac.
Beneath the elegant engravings lay a puzzle--an exceedingly complex, clever puzzle that soon consumed her every spare moment.
Had they been more experienced, the boys might have worried. Had she asked a teacher, they might have recognized the thing, and warned her.
