wild fowl hunters at Doug'sGUNS & AMMUNITION: Federal law requires the use of steel shot for all water- fowling. Thought it remains a popular excuse for poor shooting and hopeful range estimation, steel shot has not proven to be the handicap many feared - provided its special properties are taaken into consideration. Due to steels inherent tight patterning properties, we recommend firearms with improved cylinder (most shoot "modified" with steel) chokes for duck gunning and modified (most shoot "full" with steel) chokes for geese. Modified choke is the mixed bag compromise of choice. We do not recommend shot smaller than #3 for ducks. #2 or #1 shot are preferred duck loads not only for their longer range, but because some goose hunting is likely at most duck blinds. BB, BBB and T shot are the top goose loads. Popular steel loads, as well as lead shot for clay pigeons, doves and other small game, are usually available at the camp. A word about guns: experience with thousands of guest suggest that most water-fowlers will kill more geese with a familiar 20 gauge than a brand new 10. The vast majority of the best gunners we see are still getting the job done on geese with 3" 12 gauge guns shooting BB or BBB shot.

CLOTHING: Come prepared for all types of weather. Think cold and WET! Unexpected hot, dry weather is much easier to handle than its opposite. Quality fowl weather gear is a must. Camouflage clothing except gray tree bark is much preferred, but olive drab or tan clothing will suffice. Camouflage head nets can be very helpful. Good boots are an absolute must! Though most blinds are easy to reach, knee length rubber boots are highly recommended, hip boots sometimes offer greater blind choice, and waders may be helpful but are rarely necessary. LaCrosse ankle-tights are the guides' boot of choice.

MISCELLANEOUS: Hunters who do not bring cameras usually wish they had. Some sort of small waterproof bag or box (the popular 5 gallon "hunter" pails can be a bulky nuisance in a blind and a biscuit to hide outside one) to carry camera, bug dope, shells and other "possibles" may also prove useful. Well mannered dogs are welcome.

ATTITUDE: You will be enjoying some of the nations finest waterfowling, but no one can be guaranteed favorable weather and flights or optimum fair chase hunting. Thought we believe your chances of limiting are as great here as anywhere in the country, we hope you will also carry home memories of the haunting cry of geese and the graceful decent of ducks on cupped wings, memories of hard shots made - and easy ones missed, memories of time afield with friends who share you love of the blinds and gunning.
