La Casa del Hada

LOS FINES DE SEMANA DEL SEOR GALDE

Vctor Ricardo Kater

            THE WEEKENDS OF SEOR GALDE

Victor Ricardo Kater

a) November 27, 1970, up until 1:07 PM, was just like any other old day forSeor Galde (Argentinean, single, born in 1929, National ID #3.600.021, Military District #57).  At 6:23 AM, when the sun was barely lighting the dirt street in Barrio  Victoria where he lived (he was renting a small room at the Saldivar's home), Seor Galde climbed on bus #2 and precisely 17 minutes later he arrived at the Government House. Seor Galde's punctuality had nothing to do with Governor Nanclares' strict administrative controls: in his twenty years as a provincial public  employee, he was never ever late and didn't miss a single day of work (he was  fond of showing, proudly, the plated bronze medal they awarded him during one  of the many public events at the Sesquicentennial celebration, engraved with  the legend: "In honor of your constancy").

After quickly checking the La Gaceta paper (Mandrake, Agent X-9,
Political Panorama of Tucuman - "stability, o stability!, hopefully no damnefficiency-expert technocrat takes over Tucuman's governorship and firesSeor Galde's ass" -, the Sports page), Mr. 2nd Assistant in Charge ofIncoming Files and Respectable Bureaucrat attended to his daily ritual of
having a cockroach-tasting cup o'coffee with two rolls (duly purchased at Don  Toribio's bakery, located exactly half a block plus four meters away from his  house). At 7:35, the Director walked in and gave him a report to type  ("Listen Seor Galde, the Secretary of State wants this done by nine o'clock,  so you better start pounding the Olivetti... and please, please, no typos!"
"Of... of... of course, sir, whatever you say, Mr. Director").

At 8:47, Seor Galde entered an almost three and a half hour long period
of inactivity, broken every so often by the arrival of a new file, andcolored by the frequent practical jokes, the little lies and the obnoxiousteasing of Mr. Fagnano and Young Mr. Perez ("Boy, am I ever fed up with these  two creeps... they are plain unbearable!"). From 12:17 PM to closing time, one more report to type. So far, a day like any other. But at 1:07 in the afternoon, while waiting  for bus #2 across from the Church of San Francisco, she stepped into Seor  Galde's life.

b) - It's just about ten past one, Ma'am.
- Thanks! Waiting for bus #2? What a coincidence, so am I... Going to
Barrio Victoria, you said? I'm getting off one stop before. My name is
Alcira. Yes, of course, I'll call you one of these days at your office. Bye!

c) Alcira Cabrera, short and chunky, nose kinda big, uglier than heck, 35
years old - almost 10 years teaching grade school in humble Villa San
Cayetano. Much loneliness, lots of sadness and distress filling her brown
eyes and her blond-dyed hair.

d) On Saturday December 5, 1970, Alcira and Seor Galde went out on their first date. The "Splendid Theater", row 8. Somewhat boring German film and a funny American movie with no sex, some violence, but real easy to understand.
Pizza and orange soda for her; a roast beef sandwich and cafe au lait for
him. Bus #2. Sure, I'll take you home and then walk the rest of the way - it
ain't that far. On Saturday December 12, they went to see one of those hilarious  Cantinflas' movies at the "Edison Theater" and then walked for a while around  Plaza Yrigoyen. Alcira's patience in listening to the dull chatter, the meaningless crap of Seor Galde ("D in his Past, D in his Present, D in his  Future", she thought).

e) The Saturdays and Sundays of Seor Galde and Alcira Cabrera. The
Sunday-the-9ths and the Saturday-the-14ths. The Saturday-the-20ths and the  Sunday-the-28ths. The first five months, the first visit to a seedy hotel in  El Bajo, Seor Galde's almost-impotence, Alcira's semi-frigidity, the
musty-smelling room with faded curtains. And those ragged old sheets - but  fairly clean, I must say.

f) It was about mid-December of '71, when Tucuman had that unforgettable  killer heat wave. Young Mr. Perez (creole cunning with just the tiniest bit  of aggressiveness) met swarthy Alcira just by chance and got some funny,  funny ideas ("She sure is ugly ...like a fetus, but I'll pee in my pants  laughing when Skinny Old Galde finds out that I took away his lady!"). The vivacious charm of Young Mr. Perez, his indisputable skill of a Don  Juan of the barrios, the contrast with insipid, aging Seor Galde (the dry  face, the dry look in the dry eyes of Seor Galde). Saturday evening at Club  Gath & Chaves. "May I dance a few cumbias with your young lady, Seor Galde?" Seor Galde goes back walking all alone to his small room in Barrio  Victoria. And she stays with Young Mr. Perez.

g) On Monday December 13, 1971, Seor Galde didn't show up at the office -  for the very first time. He didn't show up on Tuesday the 14th, on Wednesday  the 15th, on Thursday the 16th...
