I turned in, she wouldn't speak to me. It was right across the street from the little house that I'd just shot.
The road rose up and I saw nothing ahead. I thought I was going into some excavation. That's a low water crossing ahead. The water from the lake? can escape across the road. Low water crossings are on roads, which I guess, are not inhabited by large voting blocks.
Behind a hurricane fence was the cemetery. Ok, another cemetery, I thought. Mercy was I wrong. It's good to be wrong. See.
Let me explain why I took pictures ofthese head stones. Put together I imagined a 19th century soap opera.
Mary S.Thomas was not a Fox, but was married to one. Did she change her name? She was born on March 1, 1794. She died on June 25, 1859 at the age of 65 years, 3 months and 21 days. Was life a jail sentence?
These were settlers. Well, some were. Some had been here a while longer. Ben came in from South Carolina, got married in 1838 to a Choctaw Maiden, Rachel. Doesn't sound very Choctawish. I guess that was her Christian name. She lived 47 years without him. She was 84 when she passed away. He was 50. Doesn't say she remarried. Why? Was it the food?
I don't know what to make of this one. "Consort" can mean "spouse" or "companion". The family let her lie in the cemetery so she must have been ok. Either the relation was legal or they were pretty liberal or as in the other stone, wives retained their family names as maybe a geneological record.
Mrs. Ammaryllis Willis Pierce, gets best name on site. Notice, she is not named as Mrs. Ammaryllis Willis Hilliard. Who's Willis? Who's Hilliard? She was born in North Carolina where my family came from.
Mary S., Thomas's husband, Richard Fox. Looks like he was born in Something County,Virginia and died in Lawrence County, Miss. He was 60 years, 10 months and 22 days old at the time of death. We've got 2 countys mentioned on the stone and exact dates but no Mary S? Leaves one to wonder.
I don't think Jac'kal will put up with another stop like this one. Wonder if she'll start for me?
The Fox Cemetery was an amazing experience.
