Personal

I am originally from Lexington, South Carolina, and I haven’t strayed far since. My family history is embedded there. On both sides the line extends at least five generations in Lexington. I now live in the capital city of Columbia, adjacent to Lexington. It’s a good place to live, but has its faults, just like any other city.

I have a wonderful family, including the greatest parents in the world. Their names are Dick and Debbie Kyzer. They still live in my childhood home in Lexington. My father is an electrician with Brad's Electric, and my mother works for First Citizens bank in Columbia. My sister Nikki is my only sibling and is four years older than me. She also hasn’t strayed far from home and works for Folline Vision Center.

I am 27 years young and live in an apartment with one of my classmates in the English depatment at USC (see professional page). My roommate is rarely around, so I get to do things like play loud 90's songs and walk around naked whenever I want. I live literally across the street from the USC campus. This means I can bike to class, work, bars, and several other friends' houses. This saves me much money on gasoline, ten gallons of which is more expensive than some children bought on the black market — or so I’ve heard ...

I am a huge Gamecock fan, and not just because I attend USC. I have cheered for the Gamecocks since I was born. Our football program gets a lot of press, especially since we hired Lou Holtz and now Steve Spurrier, but one of the most successful programs at Carolina is the baseball team. They just came off their third consecutive trip to the College World Series. While we haven’t won it all yet, the prospects keep looking better and better. The baseball team won its first SEC Tournament Championship in 2004 to complement its three regular season SEC titles. One of USC's NCAA titles came from our Track & Field program. Former and current Gamecock Track members brought home eight medals from the Athens Olympics. Also, our equestrian team won the NCAA National Championship in 2004.

My political views move across the spectrum from issue to issue, but in general I place myself just left of center. I am not a member of any political party because I think that once you affiliate yourself with a group, you risk placing the stakes of your arguments in a membership card instead of the facts and logic. The issues I am most passionate about are improving education, equal rights for homosexuals, finding alternative fuel sources, social responsibility, economic responsibility, and the role of science in medicine. I recently had a letter to the editor published in The State newspaper out of Columbia. Click here to read the published version.

I love music; in fact, I am a former musician. I played trumpet in the Lexington High School Catband. One day I may pick it up again, but for now grad school takes up enough of my time. I have an eclectic music library that contains everything from alternative rock to classical, from jazz to techno. My all time favorite bands include U2, Dave Matthews Band, and Tool. U2's new disc “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” is not their best performance in my opinion, but still a collection of good tunes. The same goes for the new DMB and I hopefully await the new Tool album, which might be out this year.
