This is a flawed genius of a game, it was released in 1989 by Cult software, and never really got noticed by many people, which is a great shame. Simular idea to the earlier Footballer of the year games, you are an up and coming youngster, that in his career wants to become the best footballer ever! Thats where the simularities end though, these games are quite different and are both great in different ways.
You begin the game at age 18, you have until you are 34 then you retire, in that time you will hopefully get your player into the higher leagues and international games. When you first start you must pick a team from the old Division 4, since this was made in the 80's there isnt a Premier league! Once you've picked your team, you are greeted with the menu screen, from here you can check your stats, do some training, request a transfer and lots of other stuff.
The game itself is played out real time, not 90 minutes though!! about 90 seconds a game, in this time you will spend most of the time looking at a blank screen, this is one of the main flaws with the game, but every so often, depending on your skill and your teams ability and moral, you will get a chance on goal. This is where you come in, this is simple, you will see a screen with the player, the goal and a little moving compass in the bottom left, this compass is the direction that you will hit the ball, so you must stop it at the right time, thats it, simple, but very effective! As you progress through the leagues this compass will move a lot quicker, giving you less time, and making it harder to judge your angles.
As i said, the biggest flaw is that for long periods you will not be doing much, but this actually adds to the tension, like if you've gone 89 minutes and the game is 0-0 and you get a chance on goal, you will be sweating buckets!! Some of the chances can be quite simple, but some are in such devious angles that it hurts, but all are possible, if you are quick enough and get the angle right. Once the match finishes, you will see the results form your league, and you will get a comment from your manager, on how well you played.
And thats the basic gameplay, but be warned you will get addicted, its simplistic nature is very decieving, This is a game that you could play on for hours and not realise it until you hear the birds cheeping outside your window. Once youve got through the English leagues you may get transfers from a couple of other countries, such as Spain, Italy, France and Germany, these all have harder challenges to the matches, but give you a lot of satisfaction.
