POWERDRIVE
PowerDrive is one of those games that you will either love or hate, and I personally love it.

Released in 1994, this is a conversion of the arcade game of the same name.

The game is surprisingly a driving game, its viewed from a sort of Isometric view, fairly similar to the old ironman game,
When you first start the game you are given the choice of two cars, one is slightly more expensive than the other, but is a little faster, but dare you use all of your money up on the car and not be able to repair it between races?  Thats up to you.

The races are set in ever increasingly difficult countries, each with its own particular hazard or dangers, such as icy roads, or night races.

First you must run a time trial to see if you qualify for a race, then its you against the computer in a head to head race.
Some of the levels see you not racing, but doing a special licence test, where you must perform a set of different routines to complete a level, such as driving around cones and reversing into a tight gap, This adds a bit of variety to the procedings and is a welcome distraction.

The control for the game is simple to use but can be quite difficult to master, with the controls being of the supersprint and ironman variety this may take a few goes to get used to, unless your used to these old classics.
Just to increase the difficulty a little more, if you damage your car during a race you will notice it in the way the car handles, with the car going slower, or veering of left or right, so you must be careful to stay on the roads at all times.

After the race there is the chance to repair your car, but this costs money and if you havent won many races you wont have much money, but luckily for us, some silly person has left a few wads of cash lying around the race track for us to collect, they have also left some turbo boosters and a magic watch, which stops time!!
I want one of those!
Although the game is by no means a classic, it is a pretty fine game, and will keep you interested for quite some time.

Graphically its a bit hit and miss, with some of the effects looking very nice, whereas some just look tacky, but in general its watchable.

One to fire up your emulators for then.
