Released in 1989, this was a conversion of the hit arcade game, by Sega, it was one of the first games released for the then new 16bit Megadrive. The game was also converted to almost every other system on the block, but this version seems to be the closest to the original.
The game revolves around three charactures, Ax battler - The Warrior. Gilius Thunderhead - The Dwarf. Tyris Flare - The Amazon Woman. They go on a mission to save the King and his daughter from the Evil Death Adder! This takes them through 8 stages of action gameplay.
The game is played as a side scrolling beat em up, where you can walk in and out of the screen as well as left and right, when this was released there were a lot of these games around, such as Streets of rage, Double Dragon and Renegade but this was one of the best. The stages had lots of areas which could be fallen off and the enemies could also die in this way, this added a lot of fun to the game, as you would be trying to throw baddies down gaping holes! Talking about enemies, there are tons in this game, just when you think your safe another bunch will come into the screen, some of these are quite difficult to beat, but you are aided in this task by magic.
During the game you will encounter some little dwarves which if kicked will drop a magic bottle, the more of these you collect, the stronger your magic is, each player has a different magical attack, some stronger than others. The graphics whilst nothing remarkable do add to the feel of this Fantasy Medievil land. The one problem is that they dont change drastically enough during the game, so the later levels dont look much different from the earlier stages.
The game has a nice difficulty level, it starts fairly easy but does get more difficult has you progress towards Death Adders castle. One minor point though is that you dont get any extra weapons, like in the other games of this genre, but thats not such a big deal. This can be played as a two player game, which adds that little bit of fun. There is also a one on one battle mode available from the menu, The Duel, this can be played one or two players, in one player mode you get one life bar, and must defeat 12 increasingly difficult enemies, think Golden Axe Streetfighter! In two player, its just a one on one battle between you and your friend.
