John
Chapter
9 {continued}
21~~"But
by what means he now {nun} sees {blepo},
we
do not know/'have inherent knowledge' {oida}
or
who has opened his eyes.
He
is of age {mature adult} ask him.
He
will speak for himself."
{Note:
Principal - religion destroys the natural affiliation in the home.
These parents are afraid and just back out. Ask him! Leave us out of it!}
22-23~~(These
{things} his parents said {lego}
because
they were afraid of the Jews {Jewish leaders}.
For
the Jews had already agreed
if
anyone confessed/acknowledged {homologeo} to be the Christ
-maybe
they would, maybe they would not -
he
would be put out of the synagogue. 23~~
For
this reason, his parents said, "He is a mature adult, ask him.")
{Note:
To be put out of the synagogue is very much like ex-communication.
If you are 'put out' it means no social or business relationships
with the other Jews. It was a form of slow death. No one could give
them food or sell them food or help them in any way.}
{Questioning
'Under Oath' - Intimidation Increases}
24~~
Then they summoned the man who used to be blind a second time and
said to him, "Promise before God to tell the truth {idiom -
literally 'give God the praise'}.
We
know that this man {Jesus} is a sinner."
25~~He
'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from
the ultimate source of himself {apokrinomai} and said,
"If
he is a sinner
-
and you contend he is
{debater's 1st class condition of supposition} -
I
do not know/'have inherent knowledge about' {oida} it.
I
do know one thing - that although I kept on being blind,
now
I keep on seeing {blepo}."
26~~
Then they said to him a second time,
"What
did He {Jesus} do to you?
How
did He 'open your eyes'/'cause you to see'?"
{Beautiful
Sarcasm from the Beggar}
27~~He
'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from
the ultimate source of himself {apokrinomai},
"I
told you already time after time
and
you didn't listen/hear {refused to understand the implications}.
Why
do you want to hear it again?
Will
you also not {me} want to become his disciples?"
{Note:
haha Sure they did! He knew what they wanted the information for! To
discredit Jesus. The negative 'me' here indicates he knew this was
not the case.}
{Logic
Cannot be Countered so - Verbal Abuse }
28~~Then
they reviled/'heaped insults' on him, saying,
"You
keep on being His {Jesus'} disciple!
We
keep on being disciples of Moses!"
{Note:
Watching legalists have a tantrum is like watching a volcano
explode! They cursed him like no one 'respectable' should! Haha - At
this point he is not even a believer! See verse 38.}
{Exposing
the Soft Under-belly of their Legalistic Stance}
29~~"We
know that God has spoken to Moses!
We
do not know/'have inherent knowledge about' {oida}
where
this man comes from!"
{Beggar
Hits them in their Soft Spot}
30~~The
man 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from
the ultimate source of himself {apokrinomai} and said,
"This
is an amazing/remarkable thing,
that
you don't know where He comes from
{The religious leaders always claimed to know everything!},
and
yet He caused me to see!"
{Logical
Words from an Unbeliever}
31~~"We
{himself and includes Pharisees}
know/'have
inherent knowledge' {oida}
that
God doesn't hear/listen to sinners,
but
if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will
-maybe
they are, maybe they are not -
God
listens to him {who does}."
{Beggar
Lowers the Hammer}
32-33~~"Since
the world began/'from the ages'
was
it absolutely never {ouk} heard
of
someone opening the eyes of one born blind? 33~~
If
this man did not {me} keep on being
from
the immediate source of God,
-
and I am assuming He is not from God
{2nd class condition of supposition}-
He
would not have the power to do anything."
{Note:
Summary of the Beggars 'Common Sense Logic':
If
Jesus is not from God - then I cannot see.
If
I cannot see - there is no miracle.
If
there is no miracle, then the Pharisees are right.
If
the Pharisees are right, there is no reality in the world
- because I really can see! So He has to be from God}
34~~They
'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from
the ultimate source of themselves {apokrinomai} and said,
"You
were born completely in sins {you are worse than He is!},
and
yet YOU teach us?"
So
they threw {ekballo} him out.
{Note:
Ballo is the word from which we get ball. It does come to mean to
throw. So ek means out so they physically threw him out of the temple.}
{The
Man's Response to Jesus}
35~~
Jesus having heard that they had thrown him out
{physical and spiritual excommunication},
so
He found the man and said to him,
"Have
you believed {pisteuo}
in
the Son of Man {anthropos}?"
{Note:
The better manuscripts have anthropos here for mankind, instead of
Theo meaning God.}
36~~
The man 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from
the ultimate source of himself {apokrinomai} and said,
"And
who does he keep on being, Lord,
that
I may believe in him?"
37~~
Jesus told him,
"You
have seen Him in the past with the result
that
you keep on seeing Him;
It
keeps on being He Who is communicating /speaking {laleo}
with
you now."
{Note:
Laleo means to teach categorically - doctrine in this case.}
{Beggar
just needed Mechanics of Salvation - Becomes Saved Right Here}
38~~And
He affirmed, "Lord, I believe,"
and
he worshiped {proskuneo} him."
{Note:
Proskuneo is the Greek compound word for worship. 'Pros' means face
to face with. Kuneo means to kiss. So proskuneo means to kiss face to
face. In the spiritual realm, it means for your soul to kiss face to
face the Lord - and that is worship.}
39~~
Jesus said, "For the purpose of judgment
I
have come into this world,
so
that those who do not see {blepo} might see {blepo},
and
the ones who see {blepo}
may
become what they were not before - blind."
{Note:
The first statement refers to the beggar. He was physically blind
and now he can physically see. The miracle was Jesus' calling card
that He is and always has been Messiah. The second verse is for the
Pharisees and all 'religious legalists' who have permitted religion
to blind them. At one time they were not blind, but they were
negative at the point of God consciousness and a vacuum was created
that sucked in religion and other false doctrines from the source of
Satan. They have so much false doctrine in their soul, that they are
now blinded to the Truth.}
{Note:
Jesus came for two purposes. Here we see He came for judgment. In
the next Chapter we see that He also came to 'gather His sheep'.}
40~~Some
of the Pharisees
who
were with him heard this and asked him,
"Are
we blind also? We ARE NOT! {me}
{Note:
The negative 'me' in a question indicates that a negative response
is expected, so the correct translation should have 'we are not!'.}
41~~Jesus
said unto them,
"If
you were blind {2nd class condition of supposition}
-
and you assume that you are not -
you
would keep on not having sin {singular - meaning you would
not be constantly functioning under your Old Sin Nature},
but
now you keep on contending you can see,
therefore
your sin {Old Sin Nature}
remains/abides
{in control of your life}. "
