On p.38 of St. Stephen's Parish, Cecil Co., Md., the names of children of Samuel and Ann Lum are given as follows:
Ancestral File (LDS database)
Jonas Lum, b. 10 June 1710 in Cecil County, Maryland. The Ancestral File identifies Samuel Lum as the father. [It's interesting that Jonas' brother Samuel also had a son name John who had a son name Jesse b. 1777 Philadelphia, PA. This may mean nothing (re Jesse Lumm b. 1764) but it is a possible lead.
Jonas LUM m. Mary Massey in Cecil Co., MD; they may have migrated west and be the same ones who appears in the following citation:
Col. James Wood's Fee Book, Frederick Co. VA , 1744

Jonas LUM, deceased pre 07 March 1744, Mary LUM, Administratrix, Will Book 1, p. 41. Transcribed from the original by Michelle Martens.
Pursuant to an order of Court for us the subscribers to appraise the Estate of Jonas Lum Dated and In Obedience to the same, we have met and Being sworn have Valued the same as follows:
At a Court Continued & held for Frederick County on Thursday the 7th Day of March 1744

Frederick Co., Virginia Wills Inventory, Administration by King, pg. 5:
Jonas Lum Administration of estate by Mary Lum with James Hill and John Neale, securities. Nov 9, 1749. [NOTE: "It would probably be a fair guess to say Mary Lum and Nicholas Osburne were not married yet or she would be using her new married name."--Michelle Martens. This is assuming that Mary Massey did marry Osburne. But William G. Matthias suggests, rather, that Nicholas' wife was born Mary Clowes, who also married a Lum. See below for further on Clowes-Osburne.]
Encyclopedia Of American Quaker Genealogy: Virginia
Loudoun Co. VA: Mary (now Lum) reported married out of unity 30-5-1761 disowned 25-7-1761
[This Mary was Mary Clowes or Clewes, daughter of a Thomas. If this Thomas is the Thomas Clews who wrote his will on 31 July 1784 (probated 13 Aug. 1784), he does not mention Mary. But he mentions daughter Sarah Gore, wife of Joshua Gore. See next entry.]
Loudoun Co. Court Order Book, 1762-65 Loudoun Co. Court 15th of April 1763, Page 113: Joshua Gore, Plt. agt. Jesse Lum, Deft. Upon Attatchment This suit is dismissed and it is ordered that the Deft. pay unto Plt. his costs. [In 1763 Joshua Gore, Jr. was a lieutenant in the Loudoun Co. Militia.]
Loudoun Co., Virginia Clerk's fee Book 1764, Page 50. June 1764. Thomas Triplett, Fairfax Co. ... appeared as a Garnish for Jesse Lum 15...Dr. 25 [pounds] (*Garnish means fees paid by a prisoner upon entering jail. Garnishee as to attach a man's wages or his property in order to recover debt. Obviously this Jesse Lum is not the one b. in 1764 and later moving to Columbiana Co. OH...but perhaps his father, or an uncle?)
Loudoun County Orders, 1757-1762, p. 49-50: Loudoun County Court 10th September 1761 (p. 512 of original): Jesse Lum and Joshua Gore are among the list of 12 men serving on a jury in the case of James Hopkins, assignee of John Carlyle and John Pagan, Plt. v. Josias Clapham, otherwise called I Josias Clapham of Fairfax County, Mercht., Def.

Possible surname connections? Michelle Martens observes:"On the 1787 tax list for Jesse Lumm [who went to Columbiana Co., OH], where Ann Peyton is charged with the tax, well Peyton was once a WEST. This is odd because the Joseph Lumm and Adam Lumm in 1800 Frederick Co., MD, have the middle names WEST! Also, there is a Thomas Triplett who lived around Loudoun and Fairfax whose wife's last name was suppose to be HAMPTON!!!! That is my Mortomer's middle name."

From volume covering 1755-1760:
p. 5) Nicholas Osborn, 61.186, CE, *22.2.5, Jun 12, 1755
Appraisers: Michael Lum, William Baxter.
Creditors: William Matsatt, James Peak.
Next of kin: Lydia Pego, Rebecca Mckimey.
Administration: Sarah Osborn.
[This Nicholas Osborn may be the "grandfather" named in Jesse Lumm's pension application; actually a "step-grandfather", husband of Mary (Massey)(Lumm) Osburn.
From Loudoun County Deed 1795-1796 book by (Sparcio?), p. 94-95: Jesse Lumm was one of several witnesses to the execution of a deed made in February of 1796 between grantors Elisha and Mary Janney of Alexandria, VA, and grantee James Moore of Loudoun County, selling 65.5 acres. Reference is made of quit-rents due to "the proprietor the Northern Neck his heirs." Other witnesses were James McCormick, John Spencer, and Israel Janney.
"At Court Held for Loudoun County Febuary the 8th 1796 This indenture of Bargain & Sale was proved by the Oaths of John Spencer, James McCormick and Jesse Lumm, witnesses thereto, & receipt thereon endorsed..."
From a CD, Index to the 1782-1850 Loudoun Co. Personal Property Tax Lists., sent to Michelle Martens by Pat Duncan in January 2009: "Note that only males 16 years or older would appear. The term Battalion was used for both militia and tax purposes and denoted a district." Entries for Jesse Lumm:
B. RECORDS RELATING TO SAMUEL (b. ca. 1740) AND MARY LUMM, AND THEIR CHILDREN JOHN AND RUTH LUMM:
In the previous records discussing Mary Clowes, we have wondered if she was the wife of Jesse Lum, Sr., but another possibility is that she married Samuel Lumm. She had been a Quaker, and it is known that Samuel and Mary's children John and Ruth were buried in a Quaker cemetery. [See below]
In Marriages of Loudoun Co., Virginia 1757-1853, by Mary Alice Wertz (Baltimore: Genealogical Pub. Co., 1985), Michelle Martens came across a John Sumer m. Ann Dillon 3/21/1807 at Littlejohn. She recalled seeing a previous reference to a John Lumm of Loudoun Co. marrying a Nancy Dillon. "If this [marriage record] is them this just adds more to our misery in regards to variations in spelling mistakes." She also found a Jacob Sumer m. Eliza Lewis 10/12/1848 at Gover. Son of John and Nancy? And still no sign of a marriage for Jesse Lumm, unless his name is well-disguised in its spelling.
Further records from Marriages of Loudoun County, Virginia
1757-1853:
Found by Michelle Martens on the LDS website: Ruth Hannah Lunn b. 1/30/1818 Loudoun Co. VA parents John Lunn and Nancy Dillon. Again, probably Lumm, as in above. This Ruth Hannah married Jonas Windham on 27 Aug. 1840 at Knox Co., OH.
Samuel Lumm and Almeda Gibson (m. 1830) had children Nancy and Phebe, according to LDS website. According to a will abstract, Almeda died prior to 1846. Could the Samuel Lumm m. Mary Dyer in 1840 Richland Co., OH, be the same one as this? This county also borders Knox and Morrow Counties. Supposedly this Samuel Lumm and Mary Dyer moved to Whiteside Co., ILL.
In Loudoun County death register 1853-1896, by Elizabeth R. Frain and Marty Hiatt (Westminster, Md.: Willow Bend Books, 1998), Michelle Martens found:
Ruth LUMM, white female, d. 7 Oct 1858 at Nancy Lumm's of old age at 83y 9m 6d; her parents were: Samuel & Mary Lumm, born Loudoun Co. Source: Martha Carter, niece. Is this the same one who buried at Goose Creek? If so, she wasn't daughter of John as previously guessed.
Loudoun Co. Va Cemeteries Index
John Lumm d. 1854 buried Goose Creek
Ruth Lumm d. 1858 Goose Creek
Balch's Cemetery Records of Loudoun County gives the following:
1810 U.S. Census, Virginia: Loudoun Co., Leesburg: John Lumm (mis-indexed as "Leem"). Household includes 2 males under 10; 1 male 26-45; and 2 females 16-26. His neighbors include Joshua Gore, Nancy Clews, Joseph Clews, and William Clews. (Michelle Martens, who sent this, notes references to Gore and Clews families; see the discussion on Jesse Lumm, who may be related to those families.)
Received by Michelle Martens from advance notice for a forthcoming book, Loudoun County Virginia Will Book Abstracts, 2A-3C, by Pat Duncan:
Received by Michelle Martens from Loudoun Co. Lookups:
1850 U.S. Census, Virginia: Loudoun Co., p. 174 [Thanks to Michelle Martens for this:] John Lumm(indexed as Luman), age 72, b. VA
Michael Lynn, age 48, b. VA
From the above details, one can reconstruct the following family:
Samuel Lumm b. ca 1740 and Mary (-----) b. 1740;
Their children:
More possible ciphers Michelle found while looking on the internet and Ancestry.com: "There was an Edward Sams who was disowned by one of the Quaker groups out of Loudoun about 1757. Oddly enough there is also a Jonas Sams. He was in the war of 1812 and is buried in Ohio. And there is a John Sams/Samms in Columbiana Co., OH for 1807, 1810 and I think 1820. Misread in spellings? Possibly. I also found a Uriah Samms in 1840 Knox Co., OH and a bunch of Samms listed in Edwards Co., ILL."
