Lumm families of the Midwest
UPDATED Feb. 22, 2003
B. Lumms with roots in Virginia and Maryland. Some members of this group may be related in some manner to the Jesse Lumm clan, but the connection has not yet been established.
Catherine Lumm, b. ca. 1780
An entry in the 1850 Census, for Allegheny Township, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania has one Catherine LUM, aged (70?), b. in Penn., living with (GAMBLE?) The copy is very poor. It's possible this individual is related to Jesse Lumm the soldier from Loudoun Co., VA, who lived here in the 1830s.

John Lumm, b. ca. 1827 in Ohio; died after Sept. 1860
- Perhaps a descendant of Jesse Lumm of Columbiana/Carroll Co., OH, judging from a son's name, but ancestry not yet discovered.
- Married Ann Piddington, b. 24 July 1839 in England and d. 4 May 1888 in Butler Co., Iowa. Her parents were Mathew PIDDINGTON and Elizabeth OLDHAM; the family arrived in this country via Great Lakes to Wisconsin. John and Ann Lumm lived in Paris Township, Grant Co., Wisconsin, during the 1860 census, as did Ann's parents (called "Pennington.")
John Lumm and his father-in-law Matthew Piddington and brother-in-law, Richard Piddington, soon headed west to the gold fields. A letter home from Richard was dated September 1860 and said that John Lumm had separated from them for some work "on the road for thirty dollars a month and bourd". Richard and John never returned from the west. It is not known what happened to them. Ann Lumm later remarried, to one Jacob B Crouse.
Roger N. Whiting informs me that he found a divorce record for Ann (Piddington) Lum dating from 1863, which corroborates the story that he never returned. The circumstances of the departure are different than a mere gold rush, however:

They had two children, one now living. The first, Jess Edwinth (not clear), age two years. The second child died at age seven weeks of age at five weeks after abandonment. She had lived with the defendant until 9 April 1860 when the defendant left for California. Search for Lumms and Lums in the Middle Atlantic states
C. The following are other Lumms found in the Midwest in the early to mid-19th century:
Sheldon Lumm, b. ca. 1780
- In Madison Township, Geauga County, Ohio, in 1820, and in Medina, Medina County, Ohio, in 1830. In latter his age range is 40-49, and the eldest female in the household is 50-59, so I assume he is in the high 40s, she in the low 50's.
- Perhaps these are the parents of another Sheldon Lumm, b. ca 1800 in Ohio, who married in 1830 Elizabeth Countryman b abt 1812 Canada. They had four children: James; Chloe; Pauline; and Francis, b. 1844. The 1850 Census Shiawasse County, Michigan lists Elizabeth and children.
Abraham Lumm, b. ca. 1783, in England (according to an Ohio mortality index which indexes him as "Summ.")
- He is probably that individual who arrived in Maryland in 1812, aged 29, as found in Kenneth Scott's British Aliens in the United States during the War of 1812 (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1979.)
- The following year he was in Muskingum County, Ohio, where he filed a declaration of intention for naturalization, as reported in S.S. Hargrove and H.E. Yinger's "Declarations of Intention for Naturalization, Muskingum County, Ohio," in Muskingum County Footprints (Zanesville, OH), vol. 1 (1984), pp. 1-54.
- Died, aged 67, ca. 1850 at Muskingham County, Ohio, where widow Ann, age 65, is found in 1850 U.S. Census (house 186)
- Not likely related to John J. Lumm, found in that census at house 236, as latter is said to have come from Loudoun Co., VA, and thus more likely to be related to the Jesse Lumm clan.
- More probably connected to that Abraham Lumm found in Mahoning County, OH.
- Probable child: Abram Lumm, b. ca. 1820 in Ohio
- In Muskingum Co., OH, in the 1850 Census, aged 30;
- Wife Cynthia, aged 27 in 1850, b. in Ohio;
- 3 children at the time: William J., 5; Mary F., 2, and Wm. F. " , 5 mo.

- From the children's birth details, we can estimate that Ira migrated west ca. 1841-1846.
- Also in Flint in 1850, we find Margaret Lumm, 18f, b. NY [house 583, p.212], living with James Henderson,
37m, b. NY] Perhaps she's an older daughter of Ira, working for the Henderson family.
- Ira Lum died 7 May 1875, aged 74 years, 11 months, 26 days, of "paralysis." The record, on p. 110, #2199, also gives his father's name as "Nat Lum."
- Ira's wife Catherine died 10 Dec. 1876, at Burton, Genessee Co., Michigan, at age 72, "of paralysis." Ira had preceded her in death. -- Genealogical Death Indexing System, Michigan, record no. 2231

The family head is probably that Clarissa Lum named as a daughter in the will of Sylvester Tylee of Hubbard (Abstracts of Probate Records Trumball Co., OH 1803-1843, p. 200). Excerpt transcribed by Michelle Martens:

Armisted Lum of Lorain Co., b. ca. 1820?
- He married Emeline Gifford in Lorain Co., OH, 14 Jan., 1841.
- There is also a Lum listed on the 1857 Lorain Co., tax list for Black River Twp.
- Perhaps he died before 1860, as Emeline is in the 1860 census under surname "Lunch."
- Lorain County was created from Medina Co., so Armisted may have a connection with the Lumm families there.

Thomas Lumm, married Mary Garrison on 18 April 1865. [Found by Nora Rinehart in the Illinois Marriages, 1851-1900 database of Ancestry. com.] While it seems unlikely that this individual is also a son of Fenton Lumm of White County, who had a son Thomas C. marrying in 1866, it has been known to happen that two sons by different mothers bear the same first name. I have not found a better place to list this individual, besides on the unsorted Midwest page.
